On The Road – Script Review – SPOILERS

In 1951, after three cross-country road trips, Jack Kerouac wrote his defining novel: On the Road. The book, published from a continuous 120-foot scroll, chronicles his adventures (as Sal Paradise) with Neal Cassady (renamed Dean) through life-changing experiences of drugs, sex, jazz and poetry. Now the novel is becoming a movie, 31 years after Francis Ford Coppola obtained the rights.

Filming on the long-delayed adaptation is finally underway. Walter Salles, whose The Motorcycle Diaries carries similar themes of finding one’s self on the open road, is directing a stellar cast and the inimitable Coppola is executive producing. To celebrate, I read both the June 2005 and May 2010 (production white) drafts of the screenplay by Jose Rivera, who collaborated with Salles on Diaries for a well-deserved Oscar nomination. Of course, this is only an evaluation of those drafts and not of the unfinished film.

The script begins with a Queens apartment, where Sal Paradise’s cancer-ridden father takes his last breath through a cigarette filter and drifts away in Sal’s arms. At the funeral, it’s clear this is a pivotal moment in his young adult life; the bittersweet beginning of a new chapter. Sal (Sam Riley), described as a “former college football star now a struggling novelist,” drinks away his sorrows with his “brooding, waif-like” friend Carlo Marx (played Tom Sturridge), also a suffering writer. (Marx is the alter-ego of Allen Ginsberg.)

Together they are introduced to Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), wearing nothing but a “con man’s seductive smile” on his handsome face. This nude entrance is an instant establishment of Dean’s carefree, sexually-charged attitude, but each subsequent, similar meeting illustrates the erosion of the group’s “raging testosterone, energy, and appetite” with time and maturity.

In a departure from earlier drafts, Rivera includes the first moments of Sal’s friendship with the charismatic Dean, who ultimately has a profound, inspirational influence on him, rather than leaping into their relationship already in progress. This is a critical shift because the newest draft focuses on how their bond arcs through their road trip exploits, instead of the story of Sal seeking solace and inspiration in his travels.

The two become fast friends, but Sal develops an almost hero worship of Dean that blinds him to his buddy’s selfish vanity and reckless behavior. Rivera compares Dean to Jesus at the last supper as he passes a cup of coffee spiked with Benzedrine and breaks into another existential conversation in a haze of “benny.” It’s one of several drug-fueled larks of unbridled, youthful exuberance, often celebrations of their freedoms or precursors to sexual flights of fancy (threesomes, orgies, public nudity, and homosexual experimentation). These unrestrained antics serve as a stark contrast to a postwar society plagued by McCarthyism and inhibited by conservative principles.

On Sal’s first trip he meets Terry (Alice Braga), a beautiful Chicana girl, on a bus to Los Angeles and they share a fondness for the road. Faced with the prospect of becoming an agrarian family man, Sal flees, not ready to settle… yet.

Women come and go through their lives, usually linked to Dean, but represent something very different for both young men. For example, Marylou (Kristen Stewart) is introduced as Dean’s 16-year-old wife (naked, of course) and a free-spirited, sexual nymph around the boys. But Sal takes an immediate interest in her “subtle, natural beauty” and they exchange fleeting, flirty glances and talk of living together.

Dean’s other wife, Camille (Kirsten Dunst), embodies the responsibilities he leaves behind on the road, and Sal’s picture of an eventual happy home life.

On the road again, Dean, Sal and Marylou meet the affable Ed Dunkel, his tough wife Galatea (probably Elisabeth Ross), the “brilliant drug addict” Old Bull Lee (Viggo Mortensen, described as “35 going on 95″), and his “once beautiful” wife Jane (Amy Adams). Through the two couples, Sal learns how to make a relationship last and has his first realizations about finding a proper woman.

Rivera splices intermittent pieces of Kerouac’s poetic prose with Sal’s coming-of-age self discovery story, but makes the script his own. A bit about a writer’s self-loathing and the historical context of their wild exploits are on the mark, but perhaps more impressive is his control of the characters’ energy, from rowdy spontaneity to Sal’s gradual disillusionment.

Salles, Coppola, and a talented cast already had many excited for the 2011 film, but Rivera’s script should be the biggest and best reason to look forward to On the Road.

‘Country Strong’ in Entertainment Weekly

Country Strong is in the Fall Movie Preview issue of Entertainment Weekly (Harry Potter cover). No picture of Garrett, but they did include some quotes from him about the movie. They still had the movie listed as a December 22nd release, but it’s been pushed back to January 7th, 2011. They don’t have the article online yet, so I typed it up.

Country Strong

Last year’s Jeff Bridges vehicle Crazy Heart proved that there’s an audience for (and Oscar bait in) movies about washed-up country singers. But it took some badgering by friends and producer Jenno Topping before Gwyneth Paltrow finally picked up writer-director Shana Feste’s screenplay. Once Paltrow read the story of barely rehabbed fictional Nashville superstar Kelly Canter, the 37-year-old actress said, “I could not get it off my brain … [snip by me]”

So it was off to boot camp for Paltrow and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), who costars as Beau Williams, Canter’s rehab sponsor and a struggling singer himself who ends up on her comeback tour along with an aspiring pop-country princess (Leighton Meester). The actors found the perfect on-set tutors: Tim McGraw – who plays Canter’s husband and manager – and his wife, Faith Hill, whom Paltrow drew upon for many of the character’s physical mannerisms. “When I went to Nashville, I sat down with Tim in his studio,” recalls Hedlund, who even moved to McGraw’s Franklin, Tenn. ranch for a month. “He said, ‘When you come out here, it’s not about the acting; it’s about the country music. You gotta sing all day long’.” Judging by the film’s title track, on which Paltrow joins forces with legendary vocalists Vince Gill and Patty Griffin, this cast got one hell of an education.

Deadline reports that several young actors are trying to star in Safe House opposite Denzel Washington who plays a dangerous criminal who is being transported by a young CIA agent. The start of filming the movie adaptation of the legendary romance Jack Kerouac, “On the Road,” was scheduled for early August
2010, with Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart confirmed in the leading roles. “On The Road” will be filmed on roads in the U.S. and Canada, as well as the cities of San Francisco and New Orleans, and also in Mexico. The assembly will take place in Brazil.

Sam Riley, who won international recognition for his work on “Control” by Anton Corbijn, and it will be next to John and Helen Miren Hurt in novel adaptation of “Brighton Rock” by Graham Greene, interprets the alter ego of Jack Kerouac’s Sal Paradise.

Garrett Hedlund was assigned to the second lead role as Dean Moriarty. Hedlund will work alongside Jeff Bridges in fiction film scientific “Tron – Legacy” and is also the protagonist of “Love Don’ Let Me Down”.

Beside the two main actors, will be Kristen Stewart (“Into the Wild,” “Twilight”), who will play the wife of Dean Moriarty, Marylou. ”Kristen Stewart invited to ‘On The Road’ for nearly two years, after being impacted by his performance in ‘Into the Wild’, Sean Penn, “says Walter Salles. “She knows the book Kerouac in depth, and remained faithful to the project during the entire time that the film sought funding. It’s not an actress who refuses to risk, such as incandescent character that she will live. She might be starring projects with much larger budgets, but has the option of participating in an independent film, produced by a French company, so the movie says. These days, there is little. The same can be said of Garrett Hedlund, a young actor who participated in the long casting process carried out to the film, and did a great test for the character of Dean.”

On the Road is a project that the production company American Zoetrope, San Francisco, began developing 30 years ago. And now, with Salles, cast, script and production team finally set, a new partnership was made with the French production company MK2, which is acquiring the rights and will produce the film in association with Film 4 (UK). ”Following the recent acquisition of rights, we are proud to collaborate with American Zoetrope in one of the last great adventures film of the 20th century to be brought to the screen, “say the producers and Charles Gillibert Nathanaël Karmitz of MK2. ”It took four years of research and work for the film became possible in the example of what happened with ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’. And as in ‘Diaries’ was a European company that believes in independent film making that is ‘On the Road’ as possible. In this case, the MK2 French film production company of authors such as Kiarostami and Kieslowski. Directing a movie based on the work of Kerouac and produced by MK2 and Francis Coppola’s American Zoetrope is a privilege. The technical team is basically the same as ‘Motorcycle Diaries’, and will be helping me this adventure, “says Walter Salles.

Amy Adams Joins Viggo Mortensen For ‘On The Road’ Trip

Francis Ford Coppola has been working for 30 years to turn Jack Kerouac’s seminal Beat Generation novel On the Road into a movie. It is starting to look like it was worth the wait. Amy Adams and Viggo Mortensen are joining the Walter Salles-directed adaptation that will begin this month, I’m told. She will play Jane, the emotionally damaged junkie mother of two children and the wife of Old Bull Lee. Mortensen is going to play Lee. Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley and Tron: Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund are also set for the pic. Script’s by Jose Rivera, who teamed with Salles on The Motorcycle Diaries. Coppola and Rebecca Yeldham are producing.

Wednesday Gals and i had lunch (and drinks!) at Dick’s Last Resort, it was great sitting there together and chatting, bitching about the waitress who had a thing for R, wishing we had an eye candy of a waiter instead. Hung out at Hard Rock Hotel afterwards where the gals stayed and waited to meet up with the rest of the group. When everyone was together finally, we went to collect our badges at Comic Con and our swag bags which was a huge tote bag with a Guide to Comic Con magazine, it was at least 3cm hanging off of me from the floor. Went back to our own hotels to change and shower for an official Dinner at Nobu – it was delicious, i may be the only one who loved it. Maybe because of the drinks i ordered! Ha!

Thursday It was 12AM and we saw a couple of people had already camped out for Hall H… We wanted to make sure our entrance to Hall H will be secured since we traveled from all over the world.. Yes, we joined the line by camping out too. It was a horrible night! Mainly because i had a thin blanket over me, weather was freezing!, the freight train was blasting it’s horn, kids were doing a wake up call randomly, some dude playing his guitar. I was surprised i did not go crazy afterwards. The line didn’t officially move until around 9AM, by this time, i was already buggered and was ready to go in. The Tron Legacy panel didn’t start until 11:15AM. Our seats were in the middle at least 30-40 seats behind the panel. Which i’ve uploaded my own pictures – shitty quality! Megamind Panel started first – Will Ferrell, Tina Fey & Jonah Hill + Cardboard cut-out of Brad Pitt.
As this was my first time at Comic Con, i did not know what to expect from the Tron Legacy Panel. Pattom Oslo introduced the Tron Legacy cast and shortly after they showed us 8 minutes additional footage of Tron Legacy in 3D! The footage is of, which can now be found online, as per Ain’t It Cool:

First footage was of a recognizer landing, a bright spotlight on a person below. It’s Flynn’s kid dressed in his street clothes. The ground breaks up beneath him and lifts him up to the bridge. A red light-suited program looks him up and down and says “This program has no disc. Another stray,” then locks him in place with white light restraints. The voices of the programs were electronically enhanced. There were a half-dozen other programs locked (in a standing position) next to him.

The recognizer takes off and we get a few really sweet shots through the see-through floor. A tank is seen patrolling the street under Sam Flynn’s feet. “He actually did it.” He turns to the program on his right. “Does the name Kevin Flynn mean anything to you?” “Not if I want to live,” he responds.

There’s a hooded figure standing to Sam’s left, half his face has deressed like a horrible burn scar. Lightning atmosphere fills the sky as the recognizer lands at a building.

A red guard scans each prisoner by looking them up and down. With each one he says either “rectify” or “games.” He tells a twitchy program he’s destined for “games” and the dude freaks out and jumps off the platform to his death, into a spinning fan blade stories below, dissolving into sparks when he hits.

Sam is chosen for Games and is put on a light elevator down to a dark room. Female programs dressed completely in white seductively approach Sam, two white, two African-American. They each raise a glowing finger, which cut his clothes. “Whoa, whoa, whoa… it’s got a zipper.”

His Tron outfit materializes on him as the programs retrieve pieces of armor and start armoring him up. After leg, chest and arm pieces are snapped into place (which integrates with his black suit immediately to make a complete suit) they begin lighting up… it’s almost like they light up in sectors, like a power grid turning on, and the light lines on the suit are in place.

A voice instructs him on what his disc is as one of the pretty programs receives it. “Attention program. You will receive an identity disc. All your personal information will be saved on to it…” he’s told that if he loses his disc or it’s destroyed he will be immediately de-rezed. When the pretty program snaps his disc into a groove in his back Sam’s eyes briefly light up. He’s part of the grid now, I guess.

“Disc activated. Proceed to games,” says the voice. The pretty programs back away and back into what can only be described as form-fitting wall-slots. Panicking, Sam asks one “What am I supposed to do?” She gives a dead-pan: “Survive.”

There’s a bright light in front of him and he walks into it, adjusting to his suit a little. The light leads to a lift. The lift raises in silence until suddenly he’s hit with a wave of cheers and suddenly he’s in an arena surrounded by thousands of screaming programs On a lift, taken to an arena surrounded by thousands of screaming programs.

We went on a scavenger hunt via OperationTron’s tweets for admission to Flynn’s. The gals were Fantastic, running around, i was in a maxi dress, could not run LOL. Anyway, per prize; USB Disc, Admission for 2 bracelets.

I did meet Garrett and it was truely a bizarre, unreal experience.
As an outsider (me), having a chance to sort of peek into the world that he lives, what i take out of it;
He is an amazing person – he loves what he does and is devoted.
I did not feel like i was a fan imposing, no questions were needed to ask – he was just so open..
If you see interviews of him on Friday, that was sort of how he was to us. But there is just so much more to Garrett then how he is in his usual interviews.
We had a sneak preview of his songs on Country Strong, he even sang us some! (I nearly died, he has a great voice for it) I cannot wait for the soundtrack to come out, only 5 months to go! I will buy 10000000x!
Oh and how did i forget to mention this!? When Garrett was at the Tron Legacy Booth, he saw us and yelled out our names!! We are still looking for that video footage <3

I felt very fortunate and damn proud of him. He is an extremely nice guy who loves his job and is VERY multi-talented. Meeting him has encouraged me to continue the longevity of the site with further dedication. I hope he has a long-lasting career, and i’d be sure to support him 100% along the way.

I feel blessed that i got to meet the best group of gals who bring the lols out of me and i cannot wait to meet again.

Garrett Hedlund Tron Legacy Interview (Video)

Garrett Hedlund: “It’s just such a privilege. When I first had my very first meeting with Joseph Kosinski, the director, and Sean Bailey, the producer, they showed me the video effects footage and to me it’s really nerve-wracking to ever take any meeting on a sort of blockbuster kind of vehicle, something that’s so vast. It was never kind of anything that I was comfortable in doing. I was always comfortable in being a supporting role with great people that I could learn from. Then this, having to be there every day all day was my very first experience. But being there every day with Jeff Bridges and Olivia Wilde and Joseph Kosinski it was like we became such a wonderful sort of little family. It’s the greatest experience I’ve ever had filming, you know? And also within this world… Now that we get to look back and see it – at that point it was just a bunch of blue screen and bright lights – and now seeing what they’re accumulating into it, my god I’m so proud to be a part of it.”

What was that set like? What was it like every day on the set for you?

Garrett Hedlund: “See, like this set, it wasn’t all just blue screen all the time. We had sets like this to be able to work off of. In this particular set, me and Olivia actually have one big sort of battle on this. The set is about a third of the size that it actually was, but if you look at it you see the dimensions of it and you see where the director Joseph Kosinski’s mind is in the world of architecture. And you get to see how unique and how this sort of really never been done before in terms of visually, in terms of the specifics. He’s very specific and he’s very precise in his mind in terms of… He’s an incredible director and for the world to see the work that he’s put into this, and also from Eric Barba and the whole team down at Digital Domain who did the work on Benjamin Button and others, it’s just an incredible feat and accomplishment. I’m just so excited to see it myself, you know, because I haven’t seen much of it. But any little bit of it that I do see gives me the goosebumps.”

Talk about playing Jeff Bridges’ son. That’s pretty major.

Garrett Hedlund: “Yeah. Well it is because I’d always looked up to Jeff so much, you know, as an actor. I’d always looked at his films for inspiration and as an example of how to be if I were to get roles. Just his uniqueness and how there are no rules, and how you can go from here to there and all the colors of the rainbow that he deals with between scenes. Especially now and being across from him and dealing with these scenes together, it’s such a growing process for me. It seems almost unfair because I feel so lucky to be a part of it and to be able to have this experience with Jeff and Joseph Kosinski who’s probably going to be the next greatest director.”

Garrett Hedlund visits his movie Tron: Legacy’s booth during Comic-Con 2010 at California’s San Diego Convention Center on Friday (July 23). The 25-year-old actor gave JustJared.com an exclusive interview. Check it out below!

JJ: How does this Comic-Con experience compare to last year’s?

GH: It’s funny. When we were here last year, it was just a week after we had finished filming so we didn’t know what to expect. We knew there was a huge reaction from the year before with the VFX footage. Comic-Con is the whole reason this film exists. It’s because of what [director] Joseph Kosinski did and what he’s shown at Comic-Con. Last year when we did our press conference, before the Hall H panel, there were about 23 people sitting in the room. This year, it was hundreds of people in a board room, so you get to see the growth of anticipation and curiosities.

JJ: How exciting was it to be cast in this film?

GH: It was so nerve-wracking! I had never done a film where I was in every scene all day every day. I always wanted to be a piece to the puzzle, to sort of formulate a great puzzle. I didn’t care to be the whole picture. Maybe I just wasn’t ready for it at that point.

When I was doing table reads with Jeff [Bridges], Olivia [Wilde] and Joseph Kosinski, I started saying “maybe I can do this”.

Once we started filming, I knew it would be a long tedious process, very strenuous and hard at times but incredibly exciting. Its such an exciting experience to be involved with Joseph Kosinski, who I feel is the biggest genius of the next generation.

JJ: Any fun stories from set?

GH: The [glowing] suit fit like a glove! It was tight as all hell, but fantastic wardrobe to wear. We even had to wear a full body harness underneath it to get wired up to do wire work. Then there were shoulder rolls, looking left, looking right, standing up, catching a disc, and throwing a disc. If you were watching from the sidelines, it was quite the show.

JJ: Because inquiring minds want to know, are you single? Dating?

GH: Oh, I’m single. I can’t date! I’m working.

As most of you know, i attended the Comic Con with the girls; Amanda, Bev, Elle, Jen, Laura & Remy. The Tron Legacy Panel was amazing, they showed an 8 minute clip of the movie and new trailer – which is available online.
These are the pictures i took this morning, as you can see it’s not very good quality. I am jet lagged after a 21 hour flight from Australia, so this is the best i can do for now. Enjoy!

I first met Garrett when he came to the Beat Museum about two or three years ago. He was the first one to be cast and frankly I didn’t talk about it for the longest time because he told me it was under wraps, but he wanted our help in choosing every book and every movie that had a scrap of Neal info in it. He and I spent probably an hour walking around The Beat Museum talking about Neal Cassady the man and Neal the archetype Kerouac created. I found Garrett to be an extremely thoughtful and sensitive guy, very mature and very much in tune with Neal’s place in history. “I may not know a lot about films,” I said, “but I’ve got to believe this is a career-making role.” “I’m aware of that,” Garrett said, “and I’m determined to do it right,”

After more than fifty years it looks like a movie version of Jack Kerouac’s signature work On the Road may actually get made and released to the public very soon!

LEGEND, RUMOR AND GOSSIP:

There are almost as many legends and rumors about On the Road the movie as there are about Kerouac’s book and the scroll itself! One legend has it that Marlon Brando originally bought the movie rights with the intention of playing Dean Moriarity himself. The property languished for a couple of decades until 1978 when Brando made Apocolypse Now! with Francis Ford Coppola and Coppola was able to convince Brando to sell the rights and he’d make the movie one day. A contrary story to this currently on Wikipedia is Coppola bought the rights in 1980 from Gus Van Sant, but as Van Sant was only 28 in 1980, and had yet to make his mark in moviemaking, we take this one with a grain of salt. Another story in a newspaper article says Coppola has owned the rights since 1968.

Regardless of what is really true, we do know that Francis Ford Coppola has owned the rights to make the movie for a very long time. And frankly most of us who love the book and Kerouac’s legacy and have been discussing the possibility of a movie for decades took great solace in the fact that the movie was in Coppola’s caring hands. He just seemed to be the type of guy who would either make the movie “right” or he wouldn’t make it at all.

Numerous scripts have been written over the years, one by Barry Gifford, one by Russell Banks, one even by Coppola’s son, Roman. None made the cut. The problem seemed to be exactly how you translate the story of On the Road to film.

Then there was the way Francis Coppola wanted to make the film. Rumor had it that Coppola wanted unknown actors, while the studios wanted Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Colin Farrell—or some other bankable name, depending on the decade. Coppola wanted black and white and the studios wanted color. Nobody seemed to know which way it was going to shake out and the movie simply never got made.

And then along came The Motorcycle Diaries. Screenwriter Jose Rivera was nominated for an Academy Award. Brazilian directory Walter Salles won accolades as well. Francis Coppola was impressed and figured he may have found his team. After all, The Motorcycle Diaries is about a couple of young guys running around South America on a ‘39 Norton. On the Road is about a couple of young guys running around North America in a ‘49 Hudson. Hmmm…

So, five years ago John Cassady and I met Jose Rivera while we were passing through LA in the Mighty Beatmobile. John and his family subsequently met Walter Salles and many other people involved in the production. They even had dinner with Francis Coppola himself at his winery in Sonoma and drove home with a few bottles of reserve Francis had gifted them.

Along the way it’s been a rough five years. Funding secured, stock markets crashing, recession, money lost, funding lost, investors lost. It looked like the movie might never get made. But then things turned.

The good news is it looks like Francis got his way. IMDB says the movie will indeed be shot in black and white. Now, whether this is strictly traditional black & white like Schindler’s List or possibly some kind of movietone period “black & white” with washed out colors like Saving Private Ryan remains to be seen, but I trust the filmmakers’ decisions will effectively enhance the story as opposed to hindering it.

Then there’s the casting. Dean Moriarty will be portrayed by Garrett Hedlund who has been in a number of films but never in a lead role. Jack Kerouc will be played by British actor Sam Riley, who received stand up reviews for Control. And LuAnn Henderson (MaryLou) will be played by Kristen Stewart and Carolyn Cassady (Camille) will be played by Kirsten Dunst.

Now, aside from the fact the similar sounding and relatively new names of Kirsten and Kristen is bound to screw up a number of movie reviewers (I’ve been stumbling over them for weeks now—“is it Kristen Stewart or Kirsten Stewart from Into the Wild?”) – I think the idea of focusing on the star power of the female leads is terrific.

The two relatively unknown male leads may be the ones driving the ‘49 Hudson from New York to San Francisco, but it’s likely to be the two young lovelies portraying Neal’s wives who will be driving audiences into the movie theaters. Every teenage girl in America knows the difference between Kirsten and Kristen and they’ll be dragging their boyfriends to the movies to see the star of Twilight and Spiderman’s girlfriend regardless of whether those boys have ever heard of Jack & Neal. Inspired choices, Walter. Congratulations!

Speaking of Walter Salles, he just met with John Allen Cassady in Los Gatos a few weeks ago. He had already emailed Carolyn Cassady to discuss with her the idea of Kirsten Dunst portraying her in the film, and then he and Garrett Hedlund stopped in to see John one day to hear his stories about his dad.

Coming Soon‘s Set Visit Part 2: Just a few highlights of new information of Sam Flynn

(Michael Sheen) “He owns this club and he’s supposedly the coolest cat in the city. He entertains in the club as well as being the owner of it. Apparently he’s also part of a resistance movement within the world of Tron, and Sam Flynn gets sent my way because there’s some cackle who might be able to help him, and if you want to get to him you have to go through me so that’s about all I’m going to tell you.”

In the scene being shot, Sam Flynn is being given a flamboyant tour of the club by Castor, who ascends the staircase, exclaiming “Have a drink, courtesy of the End-Of-Line Club. Libations for everyone! Change the scheme, ELECTRIFY THE BOYS AND GIRLS!” A tall, statuesque female clubgoer grabs Sam and sleekly directs him towards the bar, where TRON creator Steven Lisberger is bartending. Castor points his cane at Lisberger and gives him a little salute. An appropriate cameo.

The production is scheduled for filming in 2010. Casting sessions were carried out. Garrett Hedlund, who debuted in the movies in the epic Troy and starred in the remake of Tron (2010), is Walter’s favorite actor to play Dean Moriarty/Neal Cassady. The testing sessions were encouraging. Hedlund is a name on the rise, still quite unknown, and there’s a great identification between director and actor, just like it happened with Walter and Gael García Bernal in The Motorcycle Diaries. Furthermore, Hedlund also writes poetry and identifies himself with the beat authors. His job is to embody the young character, who’s in his twenties, “full of testosterone and energy, blue eyes, short hair, handsome, with seductive eyes.”

“On the Road,” based on the acclaimed 1957 novel from writer Jack Kerouac. The story follows Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a youth who sets off on a cross-country road trip and meets a variety of notable characters, including the charismatic but deeply flawed Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund). Stewart will play Marylou, the on-again, off-again wife to Hedlund’s character. “Twilight” fans aren’t likely to get as passionate about Stewart’s fictional relationship with Hedlund as they are in taking sides between Team Edward and Team Jacob, but Stewart herself said she’s quite impressed with Hedlund as an actor.

“I’ve met him a bunch of times, and I’ve hung out with him twice,” she said of her co-star. “He’s a great guy. … He’s written crazy stuff for it. He’s super into it. Not to sound … I don’t know how to put it. He’s, like, so in character, and he’s driving to Montreal. He’s awesome. I’m really, really excited.”

Stewart, Hedlund and Riley join actress Kirsten Dunst in the cast for “On the Road.” The film will be directed by Walter Salles and executive-produced by Francis Ford Coppola.

Walt Disney Pictures is pleased to present a very special, insider look at its upcoming Tron Legacy at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International Convention. At 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2010, the panel presentation will be held in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center. On the dais will be filmmakers and talent from the film, including director Joseph Kosinski, producer Sean Bailey and cast members Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen and Bruce Boxleitner. The panel discussion, to be moderated by Patton Oswalt, is set to include exclusive glimpses of the film, as well as a Q & A involving all panel participants, along with special surprise guests.

It was at the 2008 Convention that the vision of a 21st century Tron was born. Shana Feste is writer-director on “Love Don’t Let Me Down,” a Dec. 22 release from Screen Gems. Gwyneth Paltrow sings in this country music drama co-starring Tim McGraw and Leighton Meester. “It’s about love and fame – I don’t think you can have both,” says Feste, who previously wrote and directed indie “The Greatest.” “It’s a throwback to movies like ‘Tender Mercies’ and ‘Nashville.’ They were my inspiration.”

The filmmaker Walter Salles took the launch of ‘Na Estrada – O Cinema de Walter Salles’ written by journalist Marcos Strecker, to bring to light parts of the documentary “On The Road”, ‘ sort of a test’ for a project with a bit of epicness.

“The only way of doing this film, was doing it before a documentary in search of this film.” Says the director in an exposition, which happened Wednesday, in São Paulo. “I wanted to reach every director who had contact with this film” he says. And it wasn’t just a few names and ideas.

The rights about the Jack Kerouac’s epic book are owned since 1979 by Francis Ford Coppola. Dennis Hopper, Gus Van Sant, and even Jean-Luc Godard were involved. And they ran away. “There was a time we even though about making this movie in Russia” says Coppola, giving the dimension of the delirium that were around the adaptation. To make it possible, Salles thought that is was needed to understand the sense of the road movie before.

He goes back to his own movie fanaticism to explain the gender. “I started watching movies in Paris, as a kid. I didn’t like the town and the cinema was my escape possibility” he says “The cinema opened doors for me. And that take us to the origin of the road movie”
The road movie, according to Salles, gets born with directors that in times of silent films “mapped the physical and human geography” until then, unknown.

Paste the camera into the characters that are moving in a space, still is, a manner to discover the identity of a country and a society. The westerns did this. “Sem Destino” (1969) with Dennis Hopper also did this. And that is what On The Road will try to find. The parts of Walter Salles’ documentary On The Road, are in first place, and adventure through cinema’s history and for it’s possible languages.

We know, for example, that it was through a documentary that Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975) found the faces and landscapes of the fiction “O Evangelho Segundo Sào Mateus” It was also born the first real captured images for “Dong”, the beautiful movie “Em Busca da Vida”, by Jia Zhang-ke. Having as a starting point a village’s destruction for the construction of a barrage, the Chinese moviemaker made a movie about the identity’s dilution in a contemporary world.

“People know what they are through the place they live. When you’re on the road, in a trip, you sort of live a non-identity life.” Says moviemaker Win Wenders, to Walter Salles camera’s lenses. “On the road, you belong to the world.”

Sam Flynn – Tron Viral Marketing

An update hit on FlynnLives.com first linking to some message boards posts, including one about tracking down Sam Flynn and keeping in touch with him (he’s finally recognizing the Flynn Lives group). So where is he? Well, one of the posts links to an article that mentions that he went to Wellminster Academy. Visit the website for that school and search for him to discover that he’s into the Brazilian martial arts/music/dance technique of capoeira. Somehow, the Unfiction forum guys figured out that he was in Brazil and discovered another viral site located at amazoncapoeira.com.br that’s fully written in actual Brazilian Portuguese.

Garrett Hedlund only got as far as his plan A, which was to drive his Chevy S10 to LA and be cast in his first film before the age of 19. All went according to plan, and by the time he flew off to Malta to shoot for Troy, he had already put plans B and C behind him, along with the life on his parents’ farm in Minnesota. Now at 25, Garrett is onto his second blockbuster film, but this time as the lead character in the film Tron Legacy.

What did you think of the original Tron movie when you saw it?
I watched the original in 2003 when I was filming Troy in Malta. I remember thinking how crazy people’s minds were in those days, to be able to create a film dealing with a man being sucked into a computer. I never thought that one day I would be involved in this.

Did you have any hesitations in accepting the role of Sam Flynn?
I’ve always been hesitant of being involved in a big commercial blockbuster because there is a lot of fear involved. The fear of massive exposure, that all the visual effects will be as grand and as impactful as they’ve been promised to be, and hoping that the story will come across well. But this film was perfect to jump into without fear. The director was fantastic and the cast are amazing. I’ve always wanted to work with Jeff Bridges, and now we’re playing father and son. I’ve known Olivia Wilde for years prior, and it was just as big a deal to her as it was for me because neither of us had starred in a big commercial vehicle, and it was cool to share and take this step forward with her.

How did you prepare for the role?
The character I play is an extremist full of adventure and life, so basically we had to go through a lot of extensive physical training in order to prepare for the stunts. I had to get my motorcycle licence and train every morning from 7am to 9am, and then go do physical combat training: punches, knees, and kicks. And afterwards I would go into hard- core training – jumping over things and doing weight-lifting for an hour.

So you made a movie and got into shape?
[Laughs] Yeah, I guess, but then for my last role I played a country singer, and as much work that I put into getting in great shape, I had to put into getting in the exact opposite shape.

Tell me about your film where you played a country singer
The film’s called Love Don’t Let Me Down, and it was just as difficult emotionally as Tron was physically. I play a young country singer that goes on tour with Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, who is one of the biggest country stars out there but who has fallen down too many times. She gets taken out of rehab to go on tour and she wants me to open for her because she’s fallen for me and finds an extreme amount of promise in me. So we go on to this tour, and one thing after another starts to fall apart.

How did you prepare for Love Don’t Let Me Down?
We filmed in Nashville for two months, and I got there a month early and stayed in a cabin on a ranch, where I kept up with all the guitar rehearsals, ‘cause I never knew how to play a guitar before.

Is the guitar something you’ll keep up?
Oh yeah, not publicly performing, but as a private passion, just like writing.

What kind of writing do you do?
Anything really. If I have a great night, I sit down and use a pen and pad as a pal to whom I’m really excited to tell it all too. It’s kind of like documenting my time, so maybe one day when I’m a grandfather, my grandchild can look at it and say, “Look at the life he was able to live.”

What about your life in LA; what do you do when you’re not working?
When I get home I really just kick my feet up and ready everything I’m meant to read, and write what I couldn’t write, or watch what I just couldn’t get myself to the theatre to watch when I was filming in a different city.

What is the hardest lesson you’ve learnt since you began acting?
My biggest thing has always been privacy. It’s always been a struggle for me to express myself when the questions are personal. I prefer the ambiguity. For every interview I would almost prefer saying the opposite of what’s true about me and keep people guessing, rather than giving them facts that they can formulate an opinion or judgment of me based on what they’ve heard is true.

So it’s easier to be in front of a camera as a character rather than yourself?
Oh of course, big time. Even though you’re right there, there’s a big mask to hide behind.

Have you always been so private?
I guess so, I grew up on a farm in a small town where you do or say one thing and everybody knows about it. So I learned at a very young age just to keep my mouth shut. You see it happen. People talk around town; there’s always the town gossip: “Oh did you hear about so and so?” or “Did you hear what went on in this household?”

It must be hard to remain private when you are making movies. How do you deal with the criticism?
I think the best way to deal with negative comments is to just not respond to them. I’m not the one who’s had to deal with a lot of that right now. I mean, when Troy came out, people were saying this and that online. Yeah it’s crazy, but it blows away. I just never really cared about what people say.

Would you ever go back to living on a farm?
Yeah. I feel that everything that pulled me to the city slowly pushed me away from it. The peace and quiet and the freedom that I never realized meant as much as it did. We didn’t have any neighbours for miles, woodland to run around in. life is too short when you fine yourself sitting in a car for four hours everyday trying to get from East LA to West LA to Hollywood and then back to East LA.

If you had to give up acting today what would you do?
Be a country singer. [Laughs] I don’t know, I grew up with country music all my life, and I was never a good country singer and I could never play an instrument, but from this experience out in Nashville, I just feel in love with it.

Tron Legacy will be in cinemas in December.

Garrett Hedlund in talks to play Dean Moriarty in the Walter Salles adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road,” due to film this summer.

A role as Dean Moriarty in the Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road,” centering on two young men (Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty) who journey across the North American landscape in pursuit of self-knowledge and experience. Salles followed the route Kerouac took when he wrote the book and made a documentary along the way as he interviewed Beat poets and other characters from the novel who are still living. The project has been in development since Francis Ford Coppola optioned the rights nearly three decades ago, but is reportedly now set to film this summer.

Tron Legacy Sequel?

Disney is really confident aren’t they? I guess the viral marketing isn’t for nothing. Tron Legacy will do great when it comes out. We’ve waited long enough.

Tron Legacy is still months away from hitting our screens, but in a big vote of confidence in the film’s likely success, Disney has hired the film’s writers to start work on a sequel script.

Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who have usually been spending their days writing episodes of Lost, will be locked in a spooky old arcade bought specially for the process and told they can’t come out until they’ve finished at least three drafts and found the kill screen on Missile Command. Okay, not all of that is true, but they have definitely been hired to write a Tron sequel.

Those two are the only people involved right now, especially since a greenlight for the sequel is a long way away – and is dependent on Legacy being a hit.

But Disney has retained options on the likes of Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, and while director Joseph Kosinski’s development slate is filling up with other Mouse House remake projects, we’re sure the company would be happy for him to delay those to make another virtual adventure.

There is naturally no inkling of what the plot will be, though the world of this year’s film has been built to include future stories and according to the Heat Vision Blog, the writers are dreaming up trilogy ideas.

The early start means that, should Legacy hit as big as we think it might, Disney would be ready to start gearing up production on a follow-up quickly, with a likely 2012/2013 release target.

“89. That was the year everything changed for me,” says Sam as he readies his parachute for the jump. “I’m doing you a favor (Alan) because you know and I know that you really don’t like these Encom dog and pony shows.”

Who is Sam Flynn?
Sam Flynn is the son of famous video game creator and digital pioneer Kevin Flynn. He was born in 1982. His mother passed away unexpectedly in 1985, leaving Sam and Kevin. In 1989, Sam’s father was on the verge of a major discovery when he disappeared with no trace, leaving Sam’s grandparents to take care of him. Legally, Sam is the largest shareholder of ENCOM, the company his dad worked for, but he doesn’t want any of the stock. He lives modestly with his pet dog in a shipping container reconstituted into a home on the river with a beautiful view of the city and the Encom building itself.

Every year to make the anniversary of his father’s disappearance, he performs a daredevil stunt, such as parachuting or motorcycle stunts. In 2010, Kevin Flynn’s good friend Alan Bradley told Sam that he got a message from the telephone number from Flynn’s arcade; the number was previously disconnected over 20 years ago. Reluctantly, Sam heads over to his father’s abandoned arcade to find a hidden office, complete with a digitizer. Sam is digitized and sent to cyberspace to help find his dad.

Flynn Lives will be amassing at 6:30pm at the Hyatt Regency, in the Grand Ballroom, 5 Embarcadero Center (right next to Justin Herman Plaza).

Wear your Flynn Lives t-shirts (if you do not currently possess a t-shirt, we will be distributing them in the Ballroom).

Press Conference Details

Open to the public, but bring your forged Encom badges if you have them.

Plan of Attack
Gather, march, bide our time, get loud!

After we lay out our strategies in the pre-meeting, we will all head over to the press conference in stealth mode (jackets covering our t-shirts, badges displayed – we’ll look like every other Encom drone). Then, we’ll listen to what Alan Bradley has to say about Encom’s latest product (could be cool – let’s cut him some slack). When the moment is right, we’ll all remove our jackets to reveal that our allegiance lies with Kevin Flynn. That’s when one of our members will take the stage as we chant our mantra in unison: FLYNN LIVES! FLYNN LIVES! FLYNN LIVES!!!

Again, you’re working with buzzy young talent on Love Don’t Let Me Down.You’ve got Garrett Hedlund, who’s the star of the upcoming Tron Legacy…
I know. When I met him, he was shooting Tron. Who knows what Tron is going to be? I think it’ll be a huge success and people will know who he is, but it’s like when I met Carey. She had done An Education and we didn’t know what that would be, but there was something special in her. When I met Garrett, I felt the exact same way.

I saw a video of Gwyneth doing karaoke at the wrap party.
[Laughs] Yeah, yeah. Gwyneth singing. I mean, that’s another cool thing about this movie, is that Gwyneth, Leighton, and Garrett are all really singing in the movie. We’re not revoicing any of them. It’s all original songs. Gwyneth — as you saw — even in karaoke when she’s just having fun, she has a beautiful voice.

How did you know Garrett could sing?
I went to karaoke with Garrett.

Where at?
Koreatown, I think?

The Brass Monkey?
Yeah! [Laughs] We went to the Brass Monkey, we both got really drunk, and we did karaoke.

So for actors who have to audition via karaoke in the future, what would you and Garrett recommend?
I think he did a Pearl Jam song. It really wasn’t the best showcase ever of his voice, but Garrett went to school for us. Literally, he took four months off and started learning how to play the guitar, took voice lessons, went to Nashville early, started working with Nathan Chapman, a record producer in Nashville who produces Miranda Lambert. I mean, he became a country singer.

It sounds like you took a leap of faith in casting him. He had a long ways to go.
It was definitely a leap of faith, and there was definitely a point where we thought, “OK, are we going to have to revoice him? Is he making enough progress?” And then when you hear him sing and you hear the songs in the movie, I think everyone is gonna be blown away. I don’t know if you’ve ever met him, but he has a beautiful speaking voice. I just knew out of that voice, there had to be something special.

THE GREATEST tells the story of Allen and Grace Brewer, a grief-stricken couple whose family has been pushed to the breaking point by the death of their older son, Bennett, in a car crash. When a young woman, Rose, shows up a few months later announcing that she is pregnant with Bennetts child, the Brewers are forced to take her in. At first, Roses presence threatens to tear the family even further apart but, eventually, her interaction with each of the Brewers proves to be the very thing that brings them back together.

Written and directed by Shana Feste, who also directed Love Don’t Let Me Down. I adore Garrett for supporting people he works with

Question: Can you talk about the character that you’re playing here? You’re Flynn’s son and we don’t really know that much more about it.

Garrett Hedlund: Well it’s pretty much, you know, film sort of takes place 20 years, after Flynn has sort of mysteriously disappeared. And starts off kind of with me. Sort of see this kid, I mean he’s the biggest shareholder in the company, you know, really at this point. And he grew up without his father. Lived with the grandparents, and Alan Bradley kind of always looked after him. You know, got him out of trouble, things like that. And then, Allen pays a visit and sort of ushers me to kind of go to Flynn’s…go to the office and check things out. And I go there. Me as Sam as a character is kind of a kid with a lot but sort of does a little with it, you know? Very reclusive and sort of, you know, kind of in his own, introverted and things like that I guess. And sort of does all these kind of extreme things just because he can. You know, he’s very interested in base jumping and motorcycles and the container home by the water with the wonderful view. And he grew up without his father and is now kind of going to search or find his father. And once he gets into this world it’s, he was right all this time. And then there’s the light bikes and the discs and the game grid and all this sort of stuff comes to play.

You get to do a lot of physical stuff too in the film?

Hedlund: Yeah, initially when we started this, I started the first week in January. Started with motorcycle training and getting my license and after the hour and a half of motorcycle training, I’d drive over to 8711 where the stunt coordinator David Leach, that’s his compound. And so we’d do the fight training there; we’d do, you know, sort of exercises and jumps. And do that for an hour and a half and a lot of hand-to-hand combat. And then trained with the trainer Logan Hood who, you know, sort of trained all the 300 guys for Jeff Silver. And trained with him for an hour, intensive training so. The two months of that felt like I’d already filmed the film. And now we come on to this and we got to continue and keep it up. But everything is great sort of abilities to acquire.

Did you get to, I know the light cycles are CG but are you actually riding a motorcycle at some point in this?

Hedlund: Motorcycle yeah. The beginning sequence in the film is kind of a pseudo chase and also, yeah a big old sort of chase sequence with the motorcycle there. And then we get onto the light bikes and I think that we’ll be doing in September back in L.A. or something, motion capture or something.

Did you do any father-son bonding with Jeff Bridges?

Hedlund: Yeah, somewhat. I mean, you know, very long days here and a lot of the times it can be distracting. I mean, usually you had time between camera setups but most of us are always being fiddled with getting lights glued back on or battery packs changed and or this and that and, you know, it’s always kind of something and–

Was that part of rehearsals though? To get a good vibe going?

Hedlund: Within the, yeah with I’ve always been such a fan of him and his kind of self character and his charisma and everything. And I knew I’d really get along with him and we did. It’s kind of…he’s got a very big portion of him that’s still just a kid. So it’s very easy for us. I mean we just kind of play games. I was saying yesterday, you know, he had the game, Pigs, the old fashioned one, where it’s the snout or the leading jowl or how they land. And, you know, so it’s always funny going back and forth like that, like woo man yeah! So but yeah I mean such long hours the weekends you’re really just trying to restore, regain, what you’ve lost over the week. So most of us sort of flee our own ways and cocoon and then we come back to set, hopefully refreshed.

Did you pick up any of his, maybe his mannerisms at all since you’re his spawn?

Hedlund: I think…naturally for father and son and stuff like that if he was doing something I would, you know, almost kind of mirror it a little bit. Gestures and leaning up against something kind of had that, cause I know I have that with my dad. I’d come back in from the field, he’d be like did you finish cultivating? I’d be like well I went up and down, I still got to go kitty-corner and then I’d lean and then, you know, so it’s like you lean just like your father. So it was those little things, you know? Or hands and what you’re doing with your gestures, how you annunciate things and so it’s nice, yeah.

I don’t know the end of the movie but your character is sort of the protagonist in the same way that Jeff’s character was in the first Tron.

Hedlund: Yeah I mean–

So, did you guys compare notes?

Hedlund: You know, it’s funny chatting to him about it. I mean I won’t say how he referred to what he felt of his performance within that but. Definitely, you know, trying to still have a sense of life and freedom and all of this kind of energy. And also the wits and the smarts and always trying to sort of achieve something or always putting something together. And figuring things out, you know? That’s what a lot of this is, is I’m always just trying to figure something out. And, you know, that’s, there’s a lot of tricks that kind of go on throughout this film and a lot of revealing, you know, so it’s.

Is it difficult as an actor, I mean, my assumption is that the way it sounds at least in how it’s been described is that your character sort of stumbles into this world that you’ve never really experience before. Is it difficult as an actor shooting a movie out of sequence and to sort of track that sense of sort of wonder and amazement at everything you’re seeing, your character is seeing presumably for the first time?

Hedlund: Mmm hmm, yeah, definitely. Just kind of within that, you know, very sort of once you get into the world and once me and Flynn come to being together it’s sort of very impressed with everything that this man has kind of accomplished. And at the same time, it’s all blue screen, you know, at this point. So yeah, you got to look out. I mean, um, I’m constantly ask what you’re seeing here, how bright is that, you know, how loud is that, how many of them are there? And…

And how do you get the answer? Do you have pre-viz that you look at or…

Hedlund: Yeah they do have their, they do have a rough assembly of pre-viz of what they’re going to sort of, it’s going to kind of track to look like. Other than that, then you also don’t want to do the same, you know, steal from your pre-viz character what he’s doing…like how he stepped there. You know, or I like how, or that was a really good reaction just seeing that [LAUGHTER]. You know, the pre-viz doesn’t even look like me, it looks like some sort of six foot four Italian guy. So, it’s like is that what they really wanted?

Do you feel some kind of, you know, you are the protagonist and this kind of restarts a continuation of what is currently going to be a major franchise, a budding franchise for Disney. Day to day does that feel like a big load on your shoulders? How does that manifest?

Hedlund: Not really, I mean, I’ve always kind of felt that, you know, if you think about things that way it can only take away from you. I mean I sort of approached this film like, you know, the last film I did was a smaller budget film. You had the ability to be yourself; there wasn’t so much pressure on you. It’s only what you put out there is, you know, sometimes you’re not asked for certain things. And so it’s always trying to, I mean, within that yeah, I just try and alleviate all of the possibilities of stress whatsoever from my mind. Because I don’t feel an extreme amount of pressure in this position. Maybe that’s good or maybe somebody wouldn’t feel as much but, you know, each day is such a new sort of thing. I mean a new, a new part of the story where, you know, from the solar sailor, you know, on the game grids or every day is so different to where you’re mostly just trying to focus on that day in particular. What you’re going to do, how you’re going to make it believable. And not about, you know, the grand sort of spectrum of things to what could be or, you know, all that. It’s more of a fear than, you know, anything else, you know? I have an extreme amount of curiosity to see what this is all going to look like because for now when you look at playbacks in the monitor it’s just, you know, your mug and a blue screen. You can become critical, you’re like oh I flinched there, or I blinked there. Man I shouldn’t blink so much and then it’s like [LAUGH] but there’s going to be all this glorious stuff back there that’s going to be taking a lot of focus off yourself as well. So I can.

I don’t know how much of a fan you were of the original film but have you had that moment where you say to yourself oh my god I’m in Tron?

Hedlund: Yeah from the, I mean, when we were doing the disc stuff for me because we haven’t really tackled the the light bike stuff yet or anything but, you know, a couple weeks ago we had to do the disc game platform. And I remember watching the first one and, you know, when I must have watched, I probably watched it in 2003. So when you’re watching that you just say you’re kind of giggling to yourself like man there’s a story around, you know, being within a sort of computer. And all this and they’re wearing hockey helmets, and throwing, you know, a Frisbee is the weapon. Or like, you know, and then it actually was the Frisbee and so now, you know, how many years, you know, after that point when I just watched it out of pure amusement, you know? Now you’re throwing, I can’t even say it. But no, you’re throwing the discs and doing the spin and, you know, saying your lines and it’s all very surreal within that, yeah.

How many discs can you hit?

Hedlund: I hit them in the head. Take 37 apples.

40 feet away, it was a great shot.

Hedlund: It was funny because these guys are sitting at a monitor which, I mean, you know, where their video village was like that. It’s so hard, if you would’ve seen the target that I had to throw at it was basi– it was literally the size of a barn. And it stuck to my hand and flings off this way and sort of does a curve back this way and they’re all watching the monitors with the glasses on them. And like oh I wonder where that one’s going to go. But I’m like Claudio! And like they all, you know, Claudio ducks out of the way, the DP. And he ducks down and because I got this visor on it’s like wearing prescription glasses when you don’t have a prescription. You know, so I can’t see so by the time he ducked down I thought I had killed him. [LAUGHTER] And then like Claudio, are you alright? And then all I see is, you know, Claudio is still ducking and I see Justin come up like this. [LAUGHTER]

That’s real 3D.

Hedlund: Yeah, yeah.

With regard to the costumes, was, what was your reaction when you saw kind of what you were going to be in and then like how do you get comfortable in it?

Hedlund: It was actually interesting. Back in Los Angeles we went to a structure in Burbank called the MPCC. And trying the suit on, I mean, you had to go through every stage of it. You know, first maybe it just started with a rough form of the pants, you know. None of these gravings were even in there, no lights, no cords whatsoever, just the pants. You know, those are naturally uncomfortable. I mean just wearing, you know, this kind of under armor form, cause we got it under here too, that’s always uncomfortable. You can feel every single hair on your body movement, you know? And then you try the top on and then, you know, just kept going in stages. Then you got to come back and try it on when they got the cords going through. Then you got to come back and try it on when they got lights to put on it. Then you got to come back when they got boots ready. And then you got to come back when they got a helmet they want to try on you. And then you got to come back when they want to light you up. And it was all these, I must have went back 29 times. Even once I got out here, we were filming and all my weekends went to flying back because we had a month shooting real world stuff. And so I’ve constantly have to take my weekends and fly back and go try the suit on and fly back, get back filming. You know, so but with the suit it was always funny because for the two hours you’re in it while trying it on you’re always like, jokishly, we got to do this for how long? You know, and then the next one you’re like, two months? And then, you know, and so it’s and then once you have to put it on for the first day it’s just, it seems like the longest day in the world. And, you know, your body is doing different things. They got foot straps down here to keep the pants low enough so they don’t raise up. You got this on and you got the boots and the top holds this one up but this has to hold the top down. And so when I raise my right arm I’m feeling a tug on my left foot. [LAUGHTER] And it’s all these different things and your shoulders go out, I mean. I’ve had a lot of chiropractic readjustments. But to the point where I had, you know, both shoulders out and three ribs out, like both hips. Like it’s all just from the, you know, when you can’t sit down and the lower back is going.

That’s why they pay you the big bucks.

Hedlund: Yeah right. [LAUGHTER]

We were looking at the helmets, I mean–I can’t imagine having that helmet on for all day.

Hedlund: Well that one it’s nice cause you can get that one off. These, you know, some of the other cast members have little more technical helmets. In cave, they have to have a cooling system within there, a fan blowing around. Even one of our other cast members has a screen inside cause he can’t see out of anything in his helmet so there’s a camera here. And then the night’s dark here, his vision is dark here. But after two months in the suit, it’s miraculous how it’s just another day at work, you know? Cause the first week it was just like, is it too late to try and resign?

Did you do any method acting?

Hedlund: Within this? I mean, what–

Do you try to get far away from it after hours as you can?

Hedlund: Within this it’s trickier than I ever have to, you know, cause on certain films like the last one I did, I played the leader of a whole sort of, you know, kind of gang of thugs in any town anywhere. And, you know, it’s a very sort of dark story, you know. And my father’s John Goodman and I shoot him in the head, and, you know. Kevin Bacon and Kelly Preston, and I kill them and the kid. Both kids, I kill both kids, so, you know–

I see. So this is the same kind of role?

Hedlund: With that, you know, the trailer time is put to a sort of unique kind of use. Cause what’s not written on the page you’re constantly striving to sort of, you know, write some down, all these kind of ideas, options, alternates. And, you know, and you’re in the trailer for hours so there’s this certain annoyance that can just really rise. There’s, you can go very serious with it, I mean. In this it’s hard because you’re want to be really serious with what you’re doing and always in track of where you want to go with this, but there’s also, it’s a strange process that in between every take, time that you would be thinking about other routes and other routes people are always constantly around you doing this and doing that. Fanning the hov or replacing a light, oh we got 10 minutes before the next one? Let’s replace the light, I’m like no, no let me go and think a little bit. It’s, you know, it gets hard that way. Very distracting but, you know, somehow we are able to make it work at the end of the day, you know?

As the boys finish running through “Words I Couldn’t Say,” in walks a tall, rugged guy in a baseball cap and a plaid jacket who immediately commands the room. Though 25-year-old Garrett Hedlund isn’t yet a household name, his face is more than vaguely familiar. He’s played supporting roles in Friday Night Lights (alongside Tim McGraw there, as well), Four Brothers, Eragon and Troy. Come December, you and just about everyone you know will recognize him as the lead from Tron Legacy, the highly anticipated sequel to the 1982 cult classic.

Here Hedlund plays Beau Hutton, a Nashville country singer who’s been tapped (along with Meester’s character) to open for superstar Kelly Cantor (Paltrow) on her comeback tour. His backing band also serves as Meester’s in the film. Because she wants Hedlund and his band to have the unforced camaraderie and comfort of dudes who’ve logged long hours together in close quarters, director Feste nudged them into the rehearsal space.

Wilson puts on “Hard Out Here,” one of three “Beau Hutton originals” penned by Texan songwriter Hayes Carll — who, coincidentally enough, bears a slight physical resemblance to Hedlund. (In fact, director Feste later explains that much of the Hutton character’s appearance was modeled after Carll.) “Hard Out Here” is an old-school honky-tonk shuffle in the vein of the two King Georges, Jones and Strait.

The gravelly baritone coming from the speakers, though, is Hedlund’s. He, Meester and Paltrow all performed their own vocals, and Hedlund’s here to make sure his performance is natural in a scene with Wilson & Co.

Despite never having sung in a role before, Hedlund passes. His gruff, idiosyncratic timbre is world-weary beyond its years, channeling influences like Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard — which Hedlund cops to immediately. He later explains that Feste accompanied him to a karaoke session at Brass Monkey in Los Angeles’ Koreatown to check out his pipes.

“Because she had to report back and say [that I could sing],” says Hedlund, “I took her out to karaoke. … I think it was so bad, though, at the time.” Apparently it wasn’t quite as rough as Hedlund recalls. After that meeting — along with a reading and a guarantee that he’d be willing to put in the work — Feste was all too happy to cast him.

Casal is at the rehearsal space this Thursday evening as well. He’s making sure Hedlund’s fingering looks natural, not that he needs too much help with that anymore. Hedlund is singing along to his own voice, glancing about the acoustic-tiled rehearsal space at his cohorts.

“That’s been a nightmare,” jokes Nicholson, with Hedlund flashing a grin bright as the Hollywood 27′s marquee in the seat next to him. “I wouldn’t have taken the job if I’d known the terrible hijinks he would be putting me through in the months to come.”

Hedlund and Nicholson were in fact fast friends. When Feste and veteran music supervisor Randall Poster began looking for locals to cast in Hedlund’s onscreen backing band, they happened to ask Nicholson. “I just had the good fortune of knowing these guys, and I started showing [Poster] pictures from my Facebook,” Nicholson says. “They were casting from my Facebook friends page, basically.”

“I trust [Poster] 100 percent,” explains Feste, “and he was integral in the casting process. We both wanted to create something real. First of all, I fell in love with all the guys’ faces, and they’re musicians. They love music, and you can tell when they play. So much of the time, I didn’t even have to give them direction … and [playing with them] helped Garrett feel like he was in a real band.”

As for the actors, Hedlund heeded Tim McGraw’s advice to “live and breathe country music” — approaching the role from the perspective of a singer trying to make it in the business, not an actor tackling a role. He and his onscreen backing band even playfully wrote a handful of originals. Feste was so set on extracting natural chemistry from Hedlund and his backing band that Wilson and a couple of his pals ended up with some unforeseen lines in the film — meaning a handful of session players who had never been on film ended up acquiring SAG cards.

Captain America Contenders!

The list for this movie is getting shorter. The only ones left on the list is Mike Vogel, Chris Evans & Garrett Hedlund.

Garrett Hedlund has not tested yet though Marvel is very keen on him. Earlier reports have suggested Hedlund’s reps balked at the nine-picture deal the actor playing Cap would have to sign, a deal that would include The Avengers and any of those possible sequels. The Avengers could begin filming as soon as January 2011.

Tron Legacy Series?

The animated “Tron” TV show rumors were true, Disney confirmed on Tuesday evening during their upfront presentation. As we mentioned before, the series will be geared towards kids aged 6-14 and we will have to wait until late 2011/early 2012 for the show.

Tron fans do have something to look forward to though. Before they release full episodes of the animated series in fall of 2010, they will release a a 10-part “Tron” micro-series on Disney XD.

No word yet on whether or not Garrett will be apart of this but it’s interesting nonetheless. If the movies become a trilogy this series will most likely tie into the third installment- with that in mind, assuming Garrett’s continuous involvement- will you all be watching? If he decides not to continue, will you still watch? Let us know in the comments!

Tron Still 4!

The final image before the trailer premiere tomorrow!

Today we present the fourth and final exclusive Tron Legacy image… and this one features a disappearing act.

The first and second images showed Sam Flynn (Garret Hedlund) approach the derclict Flynn’s Arcade, to investigate his father’s disappearance 25 years ago.

Yesterday, the third image showed Sam inside the abandoned amusement den, featuring dust covered arcade games eerily lit up as he walks past.

And today… well we can now see the titular Tron game cabinet, but crucially, no Sam…

Perhaps he’s just bent down out of shot to tie his shoelace…

But maybe, just maybe, Sam Flynn has fulfilled his Legacy and entered the game, to join his father (Jeff Bridges) in the ultimate face-off against Tony Blair (Michael Sheen).

No word yet on whether Sheen’s character will be called Tony Blair, but we do know he’ll be the bad guy in Tron, and he’ll at least look like the former PM.

Trailer to follow next week. We may just pass out from excitement!

Why are the arcades lighting up underneath the dust-sheets? Is Sam Flynn displaying Neo-esque powers? All we know is that we can’t wait for this one.

Looks like a scene described in the trailer, I think.

A Tron Trilogy?

With the buzz for Tron: Legacy growing, it appears that Disney is already planning sequels for the film. The report says that if Tron: Legacy does well at the box office, it will be the first of a trilogy of films. Disney is hoping that the films can be successful in the same way that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been.

On top of that, Disney is also planning an animated TV series, which will breach the gap between the first two films of the trilogy, which will come out in late 2011 or early 2010. Disney is also talking about a new Tron ride for Disneyland.

Second Tron:Legacy still realeased today!

Until now, just about everything we’ve seen of “Tron Legacy” has been set in the lush computer world where most of the story unfolds. Well this week, Disney is counting down to the theatrical release of the debut trailer — which will appear in front of “Alice in Wonderland” starting Friday — with a new picture each day from the movie. And today’s new one is set in the real world! We even sort of see a person!

The story follows Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) as he investigates the disappearance of his father Kevin (Jeff Bridges). The investigation leads him to Flynn’s Arcade, the sign for which we see here. I suspect that shortly after this, Sam learns the truth: that his father has spent the last two-plus decades living in a computer world. Tough times.

New Tron Legacy Still!!

Darker, moodier and more atmospheric than previous images, all of which was based in the ‘game-world’ of Tron, this new pic gives us a glimpse at the real world, and it’s grim.

Fans of the first film will remember the setting too; Flynn’s Arcade – though this isn’t your Dad’s Tron, and this isn’t the arcade Flynn left behind… check out the image below:

The still shows Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), arriving on motorbike to his father’s abandoned arcade.

Previous footage and promo stills have focused on Tron – the clean, clinical computer world where Sam’s father Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) has been living for the past 25 years.

This image then serves as a marker of how director Joseph Kosinski has envisioned life outside the game; gritty.

From the dilapidated arcade and surrounding buildings, to the original Tron billboard atop the arcade, weathered, battered and torn to shreds.

‘Love Don’t Let Me Down’ highlights Nashville

Love, fame and music

The movie, a romantic drama, stars Paltrow as a popular yet troubled country singer named Kelly Canter. Canter is in a rehab facility (filmed at Barbara Mandrell’s former home, Fontanel) when she falls for Hedlund’s character, Beau Hutton, an employee at the facility with aspirations of country music stardom. Canter’s husband, James (played by McGraw), checks the still-fragile singer out of the facility to embark on a music tour. Meester’s character, country newcomer Chiles Stanton, is being mentored by James, who wants to book her as the opening act. Kelly, however, wants the spot to go to Hutton. In the end, all three go on tour together.

Canter’s emotional fragility and the developing attractions among the four principals, set against the backdrop of the tour, form the fabric of the movie.

“I think what inspired me was the theme of fame and love, and how I think it’s hard for fame and love to coexist,” Feste said. “And how the public can be so cruel to celebrities who have given them so much.

“We love to build them up just to knock them back down again, and what a difficult life that must be. I wanted to write something within that world. I also love country music and think it is the most romantic setting for a love story, and something that would be really high stakes.”

Feste said she chose the actors based on her perception of who could best execute her complicated, three-dimensional characters. It was also important to her to employ people who could perform their own songs — a nod to the authenticity she tried to achieve throughout the production.

“I think people will be blown away by our actors’ vocal performance,” she said. “I think music lovers will love this movie. We have really put our heart into this soundtrack.

“I could not be more proud of the songs on this movie. I think people who enjoy country music and a good old-fashioned love story will love this.”

Tron Legacy Teaser Teases

Tron Legacy teaser trailer after the cut! Spoiler alert!

**Update: Audio of Teaser**

Yes, it was just a trailer. A teaser trailer. But *what* a teaser trailer.

* We open on some very The Dark Knight imagery of a helicopter on top of the Encom building. The footage of Garrett Hedlund as Sam (fils-de Jeff Bridges) Flynn. He’s on a motorcycle, zooming around. Next he’s talking to Alan One himself, Bruce Boxleitner, looking a lot like one of the great That Guys, Bruce Davison.

* Alan One tells Flynn the Younger he’s tried to find his father, but, dammit, he’s gone! Next Flynn the Younger goes to the boarded up Flynn’s Arcade. In a feat of metatextuality, the actual TRON coin-op game is there. He puts in a quarter, but it doesn’t take. It falls on the floor. If I were a smarter man, I’d read all sorts of Freudian symbolism in this. While putzing around on the floor, he moves the game, finds a hole in the wall (much like the San Diego Comic-Con fake arcade) and enters a spooky lab-OR-atory.

* He sits at the desk, plays around with a cool looking computer and – guess what? Right behind him is the laser that the MCP used to zap Jeff Bridges in the original.

* Blackout.

* Then we see a GIANT EFFING AWESOME Recognizer facing down a human. It has a red, menacing trim. Then a blast of quick imagery flew by. I’m pretty sure I saw Sam Flynn behind the wheel of a Recognizer and I saw Jeff Bridges leading a band of “programs.” Also: a quick shot of Olivia Wilde that proved this film had intense, private rewatch value. We did not see the MCP. But, there was also one shot of a lightcycle heading toward a cityscape that looked phenomenal.

* After the “coming this December” (note – the title treatment for Tron Legacy was a little different than from what we’ve seen so far) there was a really short tag – it was of one lightcycle smashing into another and everyone around me went “coooooool.”

Rumor Alert!

Hey everyone! New rumors to start your weekends!

Captain American deal: Marvel is making superhero movies (Iron Man, Hulk) and planning in the future to make other large ensemble Marvel super hero films. The rumor states that anyone who signs to these films will be signing a NINE picture deal. (Like Robert Downey, Jr. supposedly has.)

I know we have all heard in past few days that Garrett was being considered to test for the roll of Captain America in the upcoming Marvel franchise. However, most reports are saying that he will not be testing due to scheduling conflicts for upcoming projects. (which I know we like to hear!)

I know we’d all love to be guaranteed to have nine movies with Garrett coming out over the next few years, but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

“Flynn Lives” Viral Marketing – Website Update

At first, the viral site contained only a binary clock counting down to Wednesday, February 24 11:00am EST/8:00am PST. Now the bottom half is slowly revealing a message, which appears to be a variety of cities worldwide.
How are the two related? Well, my theory is the cities will solidify within the next day or two and become links. Clicking on the city link will bring up a location, or list of locations, where fans can get an early, 3D look at the trailer at the above date and time. Another possibility would be locations for the next clue and starting a scavenger hunt, like the Comic-Con event, that ends with the special 3D screening. That’s just my guess any way.

Yesterday we discovered a new viral site as part of the Tron Legacy viral game that’s been running since Comic-Con last year. A box was delivered in Puerto Rico that contained a little red star, or a bit, from Tron, as well as a link to this website: flynnlives.com/zerohour. That site contains a binary countdown timer that expires at 8AM PST on February 24th next week. However, throughout the day, various websites and fans around the world have started receiving more of these bits pieces, but in different shapes and sizes. One is a red star, another is a yellow diamond shape, and one is a blue ball shape. You can see photos of them below.

Hello Team,

Our Laura & Elle went for a trip down to Nashville on Tuesday for the climactic scene and you wouldn’t believe what happened until you see these pictures below.

These pictures were taken in Nashville where Garrett is currently filming “Love Don’t Let Me Down”. It co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, and Leighton Meester. From IMDB: “Love Don’t Let Me Down” is a drama centered on a rising country-music songwriter (Hedlund) who sparks with a fallen star (Paltrow). Together, they mount his ascent and her comeback, which leads to romantic complications involving her husband/manager (McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Meester).

Pictured with Garrett are the guys who make up his character Beau’s band. From L to R: Josh Graham – Lead Guitar, Chris Scrugg – Steel Guitar, Garrett – Lead Singer, Skylar Wilson – Drums, and Cory Younts – Acoustic guitar.

Nashville Concert

More detailed information about the climactic scene at the Nashville Concert on February 2nd.

The scene filmed will be the moment when superstar Kelly Canter, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, wows them at her big comeback concert. Playing Kelly’s opening acts are Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester and Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), who, like Paltrow, will perform original songs written by some of Nashville’s hottest composers.

The actors will sing to pre-recorded playback as part of the filmmaking process. Other acts will perform live.

Tim McGraw, who will welcome the crowd, plays the non-singing role of Kelly’s husband-manager. He hails the concert as “an opportunity country fans won’t want to miss. Gwyneth, Leighton and Garrett are sensational singers, the songs are great and the scene is really exciting.

Love Don’t Let Me Down, a feature film currently shooting in Nashville, stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Garrett Hedlund, Leighton Meester, and Nashville local Tim McGraw. Aside from a sighting of Garrett Hedlund at Bound’ry (confirmed) and a sighting of Gwyneth Paltrow at a local Mexican restaurant (reported), sightings of the cast around town have been few and far between–likely due to the grueling production schedule.

Multiple on-set sightings reported to the Nashvillienne (and chronicled on Twitter by apparent insiders) included a backstage shoot with Paltrow at Belmont’s Curb Event Center and an outdoor funeral scene involving pretty much all the heavy-hitters except _____ . . . . We won’t share this one because if we tell you who wasn’t there for the scene you’ll know whose character is headed six feet under in the flick. GO TO SEE THE MOVIE. We. Hate. Spoilers.

Shooting at the Stage on Broadway is underway and will go on through Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 per the official Twitter and Facebook page of the nightspot.

I hope Garrett’s character Beau Williams didn’t die…. LOL. *fingers crossed*

Extras Needed For McGraw, Paltrow Movie

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Extras are needed for the Tim McGraw and Gwyneth Paltrow film “Love Don’t Let Me Down” shooting in Nashville. Paltrow plays a struggling country singer managed by McGraw.

A climactic concert scene is being shot Feb. 2 at Municipal Auditorium, located at 417 Fourth Ave. N. Extras must be at least 18. A free shuttle will take extras from Lot R at LP Field to Municipal Auditorium, where doors open at 4 p.m. Extras should be able to stay until 11 p.m.

Producers want 2,000 to 2,500 extras, who will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.

McGraw is unlikely to sing, but he’ll greet the crowd, and The Lost Trailers will play at 4:30 p.m. Leighton Meester and Garrett Hedlund will perform to pre-recorded tracks.

Our dreams have come true!! LOL. I wonder what Garrett’s singing voice sounds like!! Who cares if it’s pre-corded

Love Don’t Let Me Down: Extras Casting!

The Extras Casting Office of Love Don’t Let Me Down, a major motion picture starring Gwyneth Paltrow andTim McGraw, is looking for extras to appear in the movie, according to a press release.

Students would need to be available on Feb. 2 and/or Feb. 3. Anyone interested needs to submit the following with a photograph to ldlmdextras@gmail.com: name, address, city, state, zip, phone numbers, email address, age, height, weight, occupation, if you have a flexible schedule, if you play any instruments, if so which ones, automobiles available and their model/year/color, shirt, neck, sleeve, blouse, shirt, pant, suit, dress, shoe and hat sizes.

The subject should be your age/sex/location (i.e. 24/Male/Nashville,TN).

Students can also mail submissions with a photo to:

Filming begins Jan. 10 and runs through the end of February. Pay is $58 for the first eight hours, and time and a half for every hour after eight. A typical day is 12 hours long, according to the release.

Love Don’t Let Me Down – Filming

Filming for “Love Don’t Let Me Down” has begun in Nashville, with blogs spotting stars of LDLMD.

The feature film Love Don’t Let Me Down, directed by Shana Feste, has been in preproduction for weeks and recently held its kickoff party at Bound’ry in Midtown to celebrate the beginning of principal photography as well as the arrival of several main cast members. No word on whether Gwyneth Paltrow, Leighton Meester, or Tim McGraw were in attendance, but Garrett Hedlund was spotted. Not familiar with this hottie? Well, remember the Mormon hunk of hotness from Georgia Rule–essentially the only element that made that flick watchable ? (I assure you it wasn’t Ms. Lohan). This kid is gonna be huge. He’s already been cast as the lead in the upcoming Tron Legacy, the sequal to the sci-fi Tron (1982). And he’s got a fansite called “The G Spot.” We kid you not. Just keep your hands to yourself, ladies.

gwyneth paltrow, garrett hedlund (you might remember him from georgia rule. or you might not.) and whole cast of friends and characters were spotted having dinner and drinks at patterson house in nashville, tn, on tuesday evening, january 12.

“there were maybe twenty of them, and she was the only really recognizable one, but we could tell the whole group must have been a fame crew even before we saw her, because they were all wearing fedoras or crazy hair. they looked like, you know, somebodies.”

paltrow looked relaxed in a loose ponytail and denim jacket. they enjoyed a meal at a big table in the back, and afterwards mingled in group, laughing a lot.

“they’re very easygoing, and very friendly. they come here a lot, and a lot of bands, because of the low-key atmosphere, and because there is a list to get in. they know they won’t be bothered.” said a source who works there.

paltrow and two other friends left around 11 pm; the rest of the crew rolled out around 11:30.

I was checking Web Archive and found out that GHA(when it all started) was originally online in January, which means we have been online for 3 years!

Paramount eyeing ‘Four Brothers’ sequel

Paramount is developing a sequel to its 2005 thriller “Four Brothers,” bringing back many of the creative team for “Five Brothers.”

Mark Wahlberg eyeing a return to star and hatched the sequel idea with original writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett, who are writing “Five.” Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is back to produce.

The 2005 movie, directed by John Singleton, revolved around four adopted brothers (Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andre Benjamin and Garrett Hedlund) who come together to avenge their mother’s death in what at first appears to be a random robbery. Although not a massive hit, it still grossed a tidy $74 million in domestic boxoffice.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, and it is not clear which of the other actors, if any, would return. Hedlund would appear to be out, as his character was killed in the first movie.

Wahlberg, repped by WME and Leverage Entertainment, stars in Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones” and appears in “Date Night” with Steve Carell and Tina Fey.

Elliot and Lovett, repped by Verve and Category 5 Entertainment, were writers on “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” Paramount’s tentpole hit this past summer.

Filming in Nashville

Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw are starring in a $15 million movie that begins production this week in Nashville. The production company, Screen Gems, planned to hire local residents for 75 percent of the film’s crew and 90 percent of its cast (an open casting call was in December). The movie also stars Garrett Hedlund of Friday Night Lights (the movie, not the TV show), and Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl.

Photography is expected to last through the first week of March. Pre-production began in November and post-production is expected to end in April.

Screen Gems said it expects to spend $7 million to $8 million in Tennessee, which should qualify the company for a 32 percent refund on qualified expenses thanks to incentives offered by the film commission and the state Department of Revenue.

Writer and director Shana Feste describes the movie as “a rising young singer-songwriter (Hedlund) who becomes involved with a fallen country singer (Paltrow). As they embark on a career resurrection tour with her husband and manager (McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Meester), romantic entanglements and old demons threaten to derail them all.”
