As the boys finish running through “Words I Couldn’t Say,” in walks a tall, rugged guy in a baseball cap and a plaid jacket who immediately commands the room. Though 25-year-old Garrett Hedlund isn’t yet a household name, his face is more than vaguely familiar. He’s played supporting roles in Friday Night Lights (alongside Tim McGraw there, as well), Four Brothers, Eragon and Troy. Come December, you and just about everyone you know will recognize him as the lead from Tron Legacy, the highly anticipated sequel to the 1982 cult classic.

Here Hedlund plays Beau Hutton, a Nashville country singer who’s been tapped (along with Meester’s character) to open for superstar Kelly Cantor (Paltrow) on her comeback tour. His backing band also serves as Meester’s in the film. Because she wants Hedlund and his band to have the unforced camaraderie and comfort of dudes who’ve logged long hours together in close quarters, director Feste nudged them into the rehearsal space.

Wilson puts on “Hard Out Here,” one of three “Beau Hutton originals” penned by Texan songwriter Hayes Carll — who, coincidentally enough, bears a slight physical resemblance to Hedlund. (In fact, director Feste later explains that much of the Hutton character’s appearance was modeled after Carll.) “Hard Out Here” is an old-school honky-tonk shuffle in the vein of the two King Georges, Jones and Strait.

The gravelly baritone coming from the speakers, though, is Hedlund’s. He, Meester and Paltrow all performed their own vocals, and Hedlund’s here to make sure his performance is natural in a scene with Wilson & Co.

Despite never having sung in a role before, Hedlund passes. His gruff, idiosyncratic timbre is world-weary beyond its years, channeling influences like Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard — which Hedlund cops to immediately. He later explains that Feste accompanied him to a karaoke session at Brass Monkey in Los Angeles’ Koreatown to check out his pipes.

“Because she had to report back and say [that I could sing],” says Hedlund, “I took her out to karaoke. … I think it was so bad, though, at the time.” Apparently it wasn’t quite as rough as Hedlund recalls. After that meeting — along with a reading and a guarantee that he’d be willing to put in the work — Feste was all too happy to cast him.

Casal is at the rehearsal space this Thursday evening as well. He’s making sure Hedlund’s fingering looks natural, not that he needs too much help with that anymore. Hedlund is singing along to his own voice, glancing about the acoustic-tiled rehearsal space at his cohorts.

“That’s been a nightmare,” jokes Nicholson, with Hedlund flashing a grin bright as the Hollywood 27’s marquee in the seat next to him. “I wouldn’t have taken the job if I’d known the terrible hijinks he would be putting me through in the months to come.”

Hedlund and Nicholson were in fact fast friends. When Feste and veteran music supervisor Randall Poster began looking for locals to cast in Hedlund’s onscreen backing band, they happened to ask Nicholson. “I just had the good fortune of knowing these guys, and I started showing [Poster] pictures from my Facebook,” Nicholson says. “They were casting from my Facebook friends page, basically.”

“I trust [Poster] 100 percent,” explains Feste, “and he was integral in the casting process. We both wanted to create something real. First of all, I fell in love with all the guys’ faces, and they’re musicians. They love music, and you can tell when they play. So much of the time, I didn’t even have to give them direction … and [playing with them] helped Garrett feel like he was in a real band.”

As for the actors, Hedlund heeded Tim McGraw’s advice to “live and breathe country music” — approaching the role from the perspective of a singer trying to make it in the business, not an actor tackling a role. He and his onscreen backing band even playfully wrote a handful of originals. Feste was so set on extracting natural chemistry from Hedlund and his backing band that Wilson and a couple of his pals ended up with some unforeseen lines in the film — meaning a handful of session players who had never been on film ended up acquiring SAG cards.

Captain America Contenders!

The list for this movie is getting shorter. The only ones left on the list is Mike Vogel, Chris Evans & Garrett Hedlund.

Garrett Hedlund has not tested yet though Marvel is very keen on him. Earlier reports have suggested Hedlund’s reps balked at the nine-picture deal the actor playing Cap would have to sign, a deal that would include The Avengers and any of those possible sequels. The Avengers could begin filming as soon as January 2011.

Tron Legacy Series?

The animated “Tron” TV show rumors were true, Disney confirmed on Tuesday evening during their upfront presentation. As we mentioned before, the series will be geared towards kids aged 6-14 and we will have to wait until late 2011/early 2012 for the show.

Tron fans do have something to look forward to though. Before they release full episodes of the animated series in fall of 2010, they will release a a 10-part “Tron” micro-series on Disney XD.

No word yet on whether or not Garrett will be apart of this but it’s interesting nonetheless. If the movies become a trilogy this series will most likely tie into the third installment- with that in mind, assuming Garrett’s continuous involvement- will you all be watching? If he decides not to continue, will you still watch? Let us know in the comments!

Tron Still 4!

The final image before the trailer premiere tomorrow!

Today we present the fourth and final exclusive Tron Legacy image… and this one features a disappearing act.

The first and second images showed Sam Flynn (Garret Hedlund) approach the derclict Flynn’s Arcade, to investigate his father’s disappearance 25 years ago.

Yesterday, the third image showed Sam inside the abandoned amusement den, featuring dust covered arcade games eerily lit up as he walks past.

And today… well we can now see the titular Tron game cabinet, but crucially, no Sam…

Perhaps he’s just bent down out of shot to tie his shoelace…

But maybe, just maybe, Sam Flynn has fulfilled his Legacy and entered the game, to join his father (Jeff Bridges) in the ultimate face-off against Tony Blair (Michael Sheen).

No word yet on whether Sheen’s character will be called Tony Blair, but we do know he’ll be the bad guy in Tron, and he’ll at least look like the former PM.

Trailer to follow next week. We may just pass out from excitement!

Why are the arcades lighting up underneath the dust-sheets? Is Sam Flynn displaying Neo-esque powers? All we know is that we can’t wait for this one.

Looks like a scene described in the trailer, I think.

A Tron Trilogy?

With the buzz for Tron: Legacy growing, it appears that Disney is already planning sequels for the film. The report says that if Tron: Legacy does well at the box office, it will be the first of a trilogy of films. Disney is hoping that the films can be successful in the same way that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been.

On top of that, Disney is also planning an animated TV series, which will breach the gap between the first two films of the trilogy, which will come out in late 2011 or early 2010. Disney is also talking about a new Tron ride for Disneyland.

Second Tron:Legacy still realeased today!

Until now, just about everything we’ve seen of “Tron Legacy” has been set in the lush computer world where most of the story unfolds. Well this week, Disney is counting down to the theatrical release of the debut trailer — which will appear in front of “Alice in Wonderland” starting Friday — with a new picture each day from the movie. And today’s new one is set in the real world! We even sort of see a person!

The story follows Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) as he investigates the disappearance of his father Kevin (Jeff Bridges). The investigation leads him to Flynn’s Arcade, the sign for which we see here. I suspect that shortly after this, Sam learns the truth: that his father has spent the last two-plus decades living in a computer world. Tough times.

New Tron Legacy Still!!

Darker, moodier and more atmospheric than previous images, all of which was based in the ‘game-world’ of Tron, this new pic gives us a glimpse at the real world, and it’s grim.

Fans of the first film will remember the setting too; Flynn’s Arcade – though this isn’t your Dad’s Tron, and this isn’t the arcade Flynn left behind… check out the image below:

The still shows Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), arriving on motorbike to his father’s abandoned arcade.

Previous footage and promo stills have focused on Tron – the clean, clinical computer world where Sam’s father Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) has been living for the past 25 years.

This image then serves as a marker of how director Joseph Kosinski has envisioned life outside the game; gritty.

From the dilapidated arcade and surrounding buildings, to the original Tron billboard atop the arcade, weathered, battered and torn to shreds.

This just keeps getting better! Don’t forget to check out the trailer this weekend on ‘Alice’!

‘Love Don’t Let Me Down’ highlights Nashville

Love, fame and music

The movie, a romantic drama, stars Paltrow as a popular yet troubled country singer named Kelly Canter. Canter is in a rehab facility (filmed at Barbara Mandrell’s former home, Fontanel) when she falls for Hedlund’s character, Beau Hutton, an employee at the facility with aspirations of country music stardom. Canter’s husband, James (played by McGraw), checks the still-fragile singer out of the facility to embark on a music tour. Meester’s character, country newcomer Chiles Stanton, is being mentored by James, who wants to book her as the opening act. Kelly, however, wants the spot to go to Hutton. In the end, all three go on tour together.

Canter’s emotional fragility and the developing attractions among the four principals, set against the backdrop of the tour, form the fabric of the movie.

“I think what inspired me was the theme of fame and love, and how I think it’s hard for fame and love to coexist,” Feste said. “And how the public can be so cruel to celebrities who have given them so much.

“We love to build them up just to knock them back down again, and what a difficult life that must be. I wanted to write something within that world. I also love country music and think it is the most romantic setting for a love story, and something that would be really high stakes.”

Feste said she chose the actors based on her perception of who could best execute her complicated, three-dimensional characters. It was also important to her to employ people who could perform their own songs — a nod to the authenticity she tried to achieve throughout the production.

“I think people will be blown away by our actors’ vocal performance,” she said. “I think music lovers will love this movie. We have really put our heart into this soundtrack.

“I could not be more proud of the songs on this movie. I think people who enjoy country music and a good old-fashioned love story will love this.”

Tron Legacy Teaser Teases

Tron Legacy teaser trailer after the cut! Spoiler alert!

Yes, it was just a trailer. A teaser trailer. But *what* a teaser trailer.

* We open on some very The Dark Knight imagery of a helicopter on top of the Encom building. The footage of Garrett Hedlund as Sam (fils-de Jeff Bridges) Flynn. He’s on a motorcycle, zooming around. Next he’s talking to Alan One himself, Bruce Boxleitner, looking a lot like one of the great That Guys, Bruce Davison.

* Alan One tells Flynn the Younger he’s tried to find his father, but, dammit, he’s gone! Next Flynn the Younger goes to the boarded up Flynn’s Arcade. In a feat of metatextuality, the actual TRON coin-op game is there. He puts in a quarter, but it doesn’t take. It falls on the floor. If I were a smarter man, I’d read all sorts of Freudian symbolism in this. While putzing around on the floor, he moves the game, finds a hole in the wall (much like the San Diego Comic-Con fake arcade) and enters a spooky lab-OR-atory.

* He sits at the desk, plays around with a cool looking computer and – guess what? Right behind him is the laser that the MCP used to zap Jeff Bridges in the original.

* Blackout.

* Then we see a GIANT EFFING AWESOME Recognizer facing down a human. It has a red, menacing trim. Then a blast of quick imagery flew by. I’m pretty sure I saw Sam Flynn behind the wheel of a Recognizer and I saw Jeff Bridges leading a band of “programs.” Also: a quick shot of Olivia Wilde that proved this film had intense, private rewatch value. We did not see the MCP. But, there was also one shot of a lightcycle heading toward a cityscape that looked phenomenal.

* After the “coming this December” (note – the title treatment for Tron Legacy was a little different than from what we’ve seen so far) there was a really short tag – it was of one lightcycle smashing into another and everyone around me went “coooooool.”

Hey everyone! New rumors to start your weekends!

Captain American deal: Marvel is making superhero movies (Iron Man, Hulk) and planning in the future to make other large ensemble Marvel super hero films. The rumor states that anyone who signs to these films will be signing a NINE picture deal. (Like Robert Downey, Jr. supposedly has.)

I know we have all heard in past few days that Garrett was being considered to test for the roll of Captain America in the upcoming Marvel franchise. However, most reports are saying that he will not be testing due to scheduling conflicts for upcoming projects. (which I know we like to hear!)

I know we’d all love to be guaranteed to have nine movies with Garrett coming out over the next few years, but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

“Flynn Lives” Viral Marketing – Website Update

At first, the viral site contained only a binary clock counting down to Wednesday, February 24 11:00am EST/8:00am PST. Now the bottom half is slowly revealing a message, which appears to be a variety of cities worldwide.
How are the two related? Well, my theory is the cities will solidify within the next day or two and become links. Clicking on the city link will bring up a location, or list of locations, where fans can get an early, 3D look at the trailer at the above date and time. Another possibility would be locations for the next clue and starting a scavenger hunt, like the Comic-Con event, that ends with the special 3D screening. That’s just my guess any way.

“Flynn Lives” Viral Marketing

Yesterday we discovered a new viral site as part of the Tron Legacy viral game that’s been running since Comic-Con last year. A box was delivered in Puerto Rico that contained a little red star, or a bit, from Tron, as well as a link to this website: flynnlives.com/zerohour. That site contains a binary countdown timer that expires at 8AM PST on February 24th next week. However, throughout the day, various websites and fans around the world have started receiving more of these bits pieces, but in different shapes and sizes. One is a red star, another is a yellow diamond shape, and one is a blue ball shape. You can see photos of them below.

Hello Team,

Our Laura & Elle went for a trip down to Nashville on Tuesday for the climactic scene and you wouldn’t believe what happened until you see these pictures below.

These pictures were taken in Nashville where Garrett is currently filming “Love Don’t Let Me Down”. It co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, and Leighton Meester. From IMDB: “Love Don’t Let Me Down” is a drama centered on a rising country-music songwriter (Hedlund) who sparks with a fallen star (Paltrow). Together, they mount his ascent and her comeback, which leads to romantic complications involving her husband/manager (McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Meester).

More detailed information about the climactic scene at the Nashville Concert on February 2nd.

The scene filmed will be the moment when superstar Kelly Canter, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, wows them at her big comeback concert. Playing Kelly’s opening acts are Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester and Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), who, like Paltrow, will perform original songs written by some of Nashville’s hottest composers.

The actors will sing to pre-recorded playback as part of the filmmaking process. Other acts will perform live.

Tim McGraw, who will welcome the crowd, plays the non-singing role of Kelly’s husband-manager. He hails the concert as “an opportunity country fans won’t want to miss. Gwyneth, Leighton and Garrett are sensational singers, the songs are great and the scene is really exciting.

Interesting.. Death in Love Don’t Let Me Down?

Love Don’t Let Me Down, a feature film currently shooting in Nashville, stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Garrett Hedlund, Leighton Meester, and Nashville local Tim McGraw. Aside from a sighting of Garrett Hedlund at Bound’ry (confirmed) and a sighting of Gwyneth Paltrow at a local Mexican restaurant (reported), sightings of the cast around town have been few and far between–likely due to the grueling production schedule.

Multiple on-set sightings reported to the Nashvillienne (and chronicled on Twitter by apparent insiders) included a backstage shoot with Paltrow at Belmont’s Curb Event Center and an outdoor funeral scene involving pretty much all the heavy-hitters except _____ . . . . We won’t share this one because if we tell you who wasn’t there for the scene you’ll know whose character is headed six feet under in the flick. GO TO SEE THE MOVIE. We. Hate. Spoilers.

Shooting at the Stage on Broadway is underway and will go on through Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 per the official Twitter and Facebook page of the nightspot.

I hope Garrett’s character Beau Williams didn’t die…. LOL. *fingers crossed*

Extras Needed For McGraw, Paltrow Movie

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Extras are needed for the Tim McGraw and Gwyneth Paltrow film “Love Don’t Let Me Down” shooting in Nashville. Paltrow plays a struggling country singer managed by McGraw.

A climactic concert scene is being shot Feb. 2 at Municipal Auditorium, located at 417 Fourth Ave. N. Extras must be at least 18. A free shuttle will take extras from Lot R at LP Field to Municipal Auditorium, where doors open at 4 p.m. Extras should be able to stay until 11 p.m.

Producers want 2,000 to 2,500 extras, who will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.

McGraw is unlikely to sing, but he’ll greet the crowd, and The Lost Trailers will play at 4:30 p.m. Leighton Meester and Garrett Hedlund will perform to pre-recorded tracks.

Our dreams have come true!! LOL. I wonder what Garrett’s singing voice sounds like!! Who cares if it’s pre-corded

The Extras Casting Office of Love Don’t Let Me Down, a major motion picture starring Gwyneth Paltrow andTim McGraw, is looking for extras to appear in the movie, according to a press release.

Filming for “Love Don’t Let Me Down” has begun in Nashville, with blogs spotting stars of LDLMD.

The feature film Love Don’t Let Me Down, directed by Shana Feste, has been in preproduction for weeks and recently held its kickoff party at Bound’ry in Midtown to celebrate the beginning of principal photography as well as the arrival of several main cast members. No word on whether Gwyneth Paltrow, Leighton Meester, or Tim McGraw were in attendance, but Garrett Hedlund was spotted. Not familiar with this hottie? Well, remember the Mormon hunk of hotness from Georgia Rule–essentially the only element that made that flick watchable ? (I assure you it wasn’t Ms. Lohan). This kid is gonna be huge. He’s already been cast as the lead in the upcoming Tron Legacy, the sequal to the sci-fi Tron (1982). And he’s got a fansite called “The G Spot.” We kid you not. Just keep your hands to yourself, ladies.

gwyneth paltrow, garrett hedlund (you might remember him from georgia rule. or you might not.) and whole cast of friends and characters were spotted having dinner and drinks at patterson house in nashville, tn, on tuesday evening, january 12.

“there were maybe twenty of them, and she was the only really recognizable one, but we could tell the whole group must have been a fame crew even before we saw her, because they were all wearing fedoras or crazy hair. they looked like, you know, somebodies.”

paltrow looked relaxed in a loose ponytail and denim jacket. they enjoyed a meal at a big table in the back, and afterwards mingled in group, laughing a lot.

“they’re very easygoing, and very friendly. they come here a lot, and a lot of bands, because of the low-key atmosphere, and because there is a list to get in. they know they won’t be bothered.” said a source who works there.

paltrow and two other friends left around 11 pm; the rest of the crew rolled out around 11:30.

Paramount eyeing ‘Four Brothers’ sequel

Paramount is developing a sequel to its 2005 thriller “Four Brothers,” bringing back many of the creative team for “Five Brothers.”

Mark Wahlberg eyeing a return to star and hatched the sequel idea with original writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett, who are writing “Five.” Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is back to produce.

The 2005 movie, directed by John Singleton, revolved around four adopted brothers (Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andre Benjamin and Garrett Hedlund) who come together to avenge their mother’s death in what at first appears to be a random robbery. Although not a massive hit, it still grossed a tidy $74 million in domestic boxoffice.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, and it is not clear which of the other actors, if any, would return. Hedlund would appear to be out, as his character was killed in the first movie.

Wahlberg, repped by WME and Leverage Entertainment, stars in Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones” and appears in “Date Night” with Steve Carell and Tina Fey.

Elliot and Lovett, repped by Verve and Category 5 Entertainment, were writers on “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” Paramount’s tentpole hit this past summer.

Filming in Nashville

Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw are starring in a $15 million movie that begins production this week in Nashville. The production company, Screen Gems, planned to hire local residents for 75 percent of the film’s crew and 90 percent of its cast (an open casting call was in December). The movie also stars Garrett Hedlund of Friday Night Lights (the movie, not the TV show), and Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl.

Photography is expected to last through the first week of March. Pre-production began in November and post-production is expected to end in April.

Screen Gems said it expects to spend $7 million to $8 million in Tennessee, which should qualify the company for a 32 percent refund on qualified expenses thanks to incentives offered by the film commission and the state Department of Revenue.

Writer and director Shana Feste describes the movie as “a rising young singer-songwriter (Hedlund) who becomes involved with a fallen country singer (Paltrow). As they embark on a career resurrection tour with her husband and manager (McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Meester), romantic entanglements and old demons threaten to derail them all.”

I’m told the pics will “change” every month until the movie’s release. By “change” I don’t know if this means the location of each pic will vary, or if the imagery at the Santa Monica/Glendon location will be swapped out regularly.

Also, if you’re planning to hit any Disney theme parks in the near future, you’ll start to notice TRON LEGACY’s presence there in some fun ways.

If you’ve ever dreamed of sharing the big screen with a major movie star, you could get your chance right here in Music City.

Shooting will start in January for Love Don’t Let Me Down, a new movie starring Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow,Tim McGraw, Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester and young actor Garrett Hedlund (Georgia Rule, Four Brothers). The movie will be shot in and around Nashville, and casting directors are looking for extras.

Written and directed by Shana Feste, the movie is about a down-on-her-luck country singer (Paltrow) who meets a young, up-and-coming songwriter (Hedlund), and the two attempt to revive her career, with the help of her husband and manager (McGraw) and a beauty queen turned singer (Meester). Of course, a slew of Music Row woes and affairs of the heart slow down their progress.

There will be an open casting call from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Dec. 12 at the Musician’s Hall of Fame (301 Sixth Ave. S.). They’re looking for female and male actors of all ages in non-speaking roles, as well as guitarists, fiddlers, drummers, bass players and steel guitarists. No acting experience is necessary, but a recent snapshot is (at least 4-by-6 inches) and a pen. The photo is non-returnable, and without one you will not be considered.

In Love Don’t Let Me Down, Hedlund plays a rising young singer/songwriter who becomes involved with a fallen country singer played by Paltrow. Gwyneth Paltrow, country singer and actor Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester are set to star in Screen Gems’ Love Don’t Let Me Down. The project will be directed and written by Shana Feste. Jenno Topping and Tobey Maguire will produce via their Maguire Entertainment banner. Production is set to begin in January 2010 in Nashville, TN.

Paltrow most recently played Pepper Potts in the 2008 blockbuster Iron Man and will reprise her role in the upcoming sequel, Iron Man 2. Paltrow garnered the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in Shakespeare in Love.

McGraw previously had roles in Four Christmases, The Kingdom, Flicka and Friday Night Lights. He can currently be seen in theaters in The Blind Side.

Hedlund will next be seen in The Walt Disney Company’s highly-anticipated film Tron Legacy. His credits also include Death Sentence, Four Brothers, Friday Night Lights and Troy.

Meester is best known for her role as Blair Waldorf in the popular teen TV drama “Gossip Girl.” She will next be seen in Screen Gems’ upcoming thriller The Roommate, and Fox’s Date Night, opposite Steve Carell and Tina Fey.

Feste wrote and directed the 2009 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury nominee The Greatest.

Screen Gems’ Senior Vice President of Production, Nick Phillips will oversee the project for the studio.

You have heard the buzz on the new TRON film, now see the world premiere of the game at the Video Game Awards 2009 Saturday December 12th, 8PM/7C only on SPIKE. The video game coming soon to the Xbox 360 , Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3 is based on the upcoming film “Tron 2.0″ by director Joseph Kosinski and starring Garrett Hedlund (Hectic, Eragon).

Hopefully Garrett will lend his voice for the game and i’d be sure to buy it! I wonder if he will be at the Spike Tv Awards… one can only hope

According to TheNewsPK, they might film Eldest. I think the OP got his details from Inheriwiki (Can never trust Wiki).

20th Century Fox currently holds the rights from Knopf to produce the sequel Eldest, and there have been rumors of it being released in Summer of 2011; however, this information is currently uncertain as they are making no statement to support the claim.

Edward Speleers has stated that he was training up for a second movie, and an unofficial report said something about the movie being filmed which is a good sign for many that Eldest The Movie, will be made. However, Garrett Hedlund is playing Louis in the movie Hectic (2008), so it is possible that they are waiting for “Murtagh” to come back. More information will be posted on this page as it comes in. According to IMDB website, John Malkovich has several movies in the making, all these movies with 2008 dates.
It was also said in a press release by 20th Century Fox that there will be a feature on the upcoming Eragon DVD called “Just The Beginning” that will give us a “postmortem look at what’s to come in the film series”

Eragon didn’t do well in the cinemas and i highly doubt that they will film Eldest.

Sam Flynn drives up on his bike and unlocks the front door of the arcade. The Flynn’s set is recreated perfectly, we even see the couch in Flynn’s apartment upstairs, covered in bed sheets. The arcade is dark, but one machine is obviously on in the back. As Daft Punk plays, Sam walks to the back past the tarped machines. He pulls the tarp off the final game and it is on, clearly labeled “TRON.” Sam starts to put a coin in the machine, but drops it. As he goes to pick it up, he notices a scratch in the tile floor. On a hunch, he pulls the TRON cabinet out and discovers a secret passage behind the machine. Sam walks into the passage and the machine ominously slides back into position, closing the door.

I wonder when and if the clip will be put online!! I need to see some Garrett in action, i’m sure you girls too!!

Comic Con Panel Report for Tron:Legacy

So we have an official movie name and an official name for Garrett’s character.

We also know it’s not a re-make but it’s a sequel. And we finally get to hear from the cast.

Comic Con 2009 has been a blessing for our unanswered questions. Now here’s a report from the Tron: Legacy panel.

“One of the most anticipated films of 2011 is “Tron Legacy,” the sequel to the 1982 sci-fi movie “Tron.” Disney didn’t disappoint fans during their 3-D panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday.

Filmmakers and members of the cast, including Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn, introduced footage revealing that the story revolves around Kevin’s son Sam.

‘I go on search for my father and find myself in this crazy world,” said actor Garrett Hedlund, who plays Sam Flynn.’”

Tron 2 is so last year’s SDCC. It’s now Tron: Legacy. Adjust accordingly.

Since last year’s geek gathering, fans were teased by the return of Tron, the 1982 film that put Jeff Bridges into a live-action, CG hybrid that developed quite the cult following.

A sequel is ready to give the fans what they want, and Disney’s Hall H panel provided a sampling of Tron 2’s Light Cycle goodness. TRON producers Sean Bailey and Steve Lisberger greeted an enthusiastic crowd with concept art, kicking off with a first-look (in 3-D) at the new title treatment.

Olivia Wilde (who plays a loyal friend of Kevin Flynn), Garrett Hedlund and the Dude, Jeff Bridges were on hand for some Q & A. No trailer, no final footage persay, as it was announced that they had just finished shooting last week. But we did see a rough assembly cut of a key scene in the film: Spoilers from our next trip to the ENCOM mainframe begin here.

Hedlund as Flynn’s son pulls up to his father’s condemned arcade, and the scene milks some genuine — and surprising — tension using, wait for it, a Journey song.

Flynn’s son enters an arcade full of old arcade games sporting dust covers. He moves further into the room, as Journey’s “Separate Ways” blares from a still-functioning jukebox. (You were expecting Guitar Hero?).

The son explores further, past arcade games draped in plastic, to a game in the back that is still on, a game under a neon sign that reads TRON. We glimpse the young Flynn playing the original TRON arcade we pumped quarters into growing up. Flynn’s son tries to drop a quarter into the slot and the game refuses it, spitting out his quarter to the floor.

Journey is still blaring from the jukebox, and the tension is really pounding. Flynn’s son picks up his quarter and sees that the game conceals a secret passage behind the wall. He pushes aside the game, opens the passage, and enters — the song continues as the game closes in over the passage, locking Flynn inside before cutting to titles.

The panel also showed the teaser trailer from last year’s SDCC, but now in 3-effin’-D. The trailer features a new Light Cycle chased by an old one of sorts, its rider sporting black and yellow grid attire as the yellow rider’s light wake destroys our new rider’s bike. The rider is knocked into the air and lands on the ground, stalked by the yellow rider on foot — as an older Flynn (Bridges) watches from a cliff-face lair. “You’ve won, alright?!” begs the new rider, as the Yellow Rider readies a disc.

“It’s just a game,” the new rider insists — inches from death. The yellow rider’s face shield then flickers to life, revealing a digital visage of a young Flynn — before he answers, “Not anymore” — and brings the disc down for a killing stroke as we cut to black.

Rounding out the panel was a sneak peek at the new world of Legacy via concept art, which blends the worlds of Blade Runner and A.I. with that of the original Tron.

Expect scenes off the grid to play a significant role in the new movie, as the panel revealed a new look for Tron City, one surrounded by very black, very rocky terrain a la the wasteland outside Zion in the Matrix movies.

Disc Wars were up next, and they get a huge evolution. We saw a rendering of a new arena for the games, which feature 16 combatants on various platforms that recombine as the matches widdle down to 2 players. The goal now for players is two-fold — strike down your opponent with the disc or score a knock out into de-res for the win.

Footage shot of an athlete engaging in awesome, beyond wire-fu Disc War moves concluded the behind-the-scenes showcase. The coolest thing about this part, aside from the guy spinning 360 in mid-air, was that he did it without the aid of wires. Without the aid of CG or a springboard. This athlete is a human Neo, apparently, which he reminded us by finishing a spin move and tossing the disc in John Woo slow motion.

TRON: Legacy was arguably the best presentation from the Disney panel, right after Johnny Depp’s surprise appearance. No one knew quite what to expect, but everyone wants this movie ASAP. We all left with mouths wide in awe at a sequel that promises to make its mark in the competitive 3-D landscape.

Along with the new title, Comic Con 2009 also gave the ones lucky enough to attend the event a sneek peek at a key scene from the movie, albeit a rough one.

Garrett attended the Grand Opening of Roots Robson Store on May 28th 2009.

Roots officially inaugurated its newly renovated West Coast flagship store on Robson St. with one BIG launch recently in Vancouver!

In addition, the lead role in this draft is a young programmer named Rush, while the Hollywood trades have confirmed that Garrett Hedlund is set to play the movie’s lead: young programmer Sean Flynn, son to the Jeff Bridges character from the original.

The Set-up
Remember the Encom corporation? Well, they’re hard at work on a new global information network called X-Net. They’re pitching it as the world’s only 100 percent secure information network. Encom code monkeys are working ’round the clock to get X-Net ready for launch, but a powerful virus keeps attacking their core system: a virus called Tron. Meanwhile, other computer viruses have been proliferating around the world, making X-Net a massive success before its launch. Everyone is terrified that the world’s computer systems – from the Internet on down – are going to crash, and X-Net is the only solution.
The first twist
Encom’s evil CEO, named Sinclair in this draft, engineered the global virus attacks to frighten everyone (and I mean everyone) to get on board with X-Net so he’ll have total control over all the world’s information.

The second twist
Years ago, Sinclair managed to use the lazer-digitizer thingy from the first movie to zap Jeff Bridge’s character (Kevin Flynn) into the Encom system. Sinclair thought he killed Flynn, but Flynn has remained alive inside the system as a freedom fighter. Flynn used the Tron program as the base code for a powerful new app that’s designed to take down X-Net.

The problem
Well, the problems. My main issues with Jeffries’ script are its lack of tech literacy and its failure to explore the religious themes introduced in the original movie. Let’s address those individually.

Lack of tech literacy and my insanely detailed interpretation of Tron’s cyber-world
I’ll use the term “cyber-world” to refer to the neon-luminescent realm inside computers that these movies explore. OK, I readily concede that I’m being a nit-picky nerd here, but walk with me on this. One of the challenges of making a Tron movie is to accurately present cyber-world analogues for digital events.
What does that mean? Let’s take a simple example: In the original movie, when a program was erased, we saw that action presented as that program’s death. The residents of the cyber-world call this death “deresolution” and casually use the term “de-rez” instead of “kill.”

t’s break this down. In this scene, Flynn is trying to hack into Encom’s mainframe to recover evidence that a former coworker (Dillinger, played by David Warner) ripped off his programming ideas. He wrote a program called Clu to help him do it. We see Clu attempt to infiltrate a memory center, only to be removed from the system and deleted.

That’s what happens in the real world.

But in the cyber-world, Clu is represented by a human avatar played by Jeff Bridges. (Side note: Having the same actor play the programmer and their program is still a great device.) Furthermore, Clu is riding in a tank from a videogame that Flynn himself programmed called Space Paranoids. Here’s where it gets interesting. Think back to the real world. Is Flynn playing a video game? Nope – he’s looking at a bunch of code onscreen.
So if Flynn isn’t playing a game, why is his program riding in one of his tanks? A literal way to interpret this is that Flynn used some code from his video game in the Clu program, but allow me to submit a different interpretation:
Flynn’s a great programmer, and his programs reflect that. He may not have used code from Space Paranoids to write Clu, but he wrote Clu so well that it’s like he was riding in a tank from Space Paranoids.
Allow me to pre-empt some of the reaction I’ll get for this review: Yes, yes yes – I am a gigantic fucking geek. It’s ridiculous that I’m 1,000 words into a review that reads this deep into Tron. No argument here, but I think that Lisberger is working on a wonderfully rich level of metaphor. If we go back to my “de-rez equals kill” idea, we can see it applies to the end of the clip above, where the Master Control Program kills Clu.

But once again, here’s where it gets interesting. When the MCP is “interrogating” Clu, what exactly is happening? Are they having that dialogue inside the computer? I submit that they aren’t. The MCP is trying to break whatever encryption Flynn applied to Clu, but it’s too strong, even for the mighty MCP. We see the strength of Flynn’s craft represented as Clu’s defiance in the face of torture and death.

Back at the beginning of the clip, we see and hear the transition into this world of metaphor as Flynn calls up the Clu program in the real world. In the real world, he’s mumbling to himself like any good code monkey, but when the movie shifts to Clu’s perspective, Flynn’s dialogue changes – he starts giving orders and his tone shifts to that of a military commander who’s goading and encouraging his digital lieutenant. Is Flynn really saying all that stuff? I submit that he isn’t, but that is how the Clu program perceives his interactions with his user.
Lisberger came up with some great shit!

The human brain, when confronted with unusual stimuli, will usually try to interpret that information in the best way it knows how. When Flynn gets zapped into the cyber-world in the original movie, I submit that his digitized gray matter interpreted the insane input from the cyber-world in the best way it knew how – and the result was a literal realization of the metaphorical relationship between the physical and cyber worlds that Lisberger imagined.
Now for the bad news
Jeffries’ script kind of misses the point.

It starts out fine, with an action scene played out among operatives for X-Net (deliciously called “X-Takks”) and the amped-up Tron program, but when it cuts to the real world, we see dozens of Encom computer techs – including Rush – running around trying to “find” the Tron program. Rush leads the charge, naturally, chasing Tron around the mainframe and eventually onto the old game grid.

Let’s get this straight: The script depicts Rush coding, and then his coding somehow transposes into a video-game “chase” with Tron.

OK, don’t get me wrong: That’s pretty cool, and I suspect that it’ll play well onscreen, but it just doesn’t make any damn sense, and it jettisons the metaphorical framework that Lisberger established in the first movie.

An obvious counter to my argument is: “Hey, asshole, scenes with programmers typing at keyboards aren’t interesting.” True, but that’s why most of the original movie takes place in the cyber-world. Let’s not forget that there’s a whole parallel storyline in the original movie that Lisberger didn’t show us: Alan’s. Flynn’s plan was to go into the mainframe, distract the MCP and let Alan activate his Tron program. We see that happen in the cyber-world, but in the real world, the events were almost instantaneous. It’s easy to miss, but Lisberger established that the inhabitants of the cyber-world function on a much faster timeline than humans, which makes sense, given that they’re freaking computer programs.

Unfortunately, Jeffries’ opening sequence falls for this old idea and shows us a bunch of frantic programmers working to stop a hack in progress. Now, to be fair, his script later justifies this choice by revealing that the hack is coming from inside the system itself by way of Flynn and his freedom fighters. It’s not a huge deal, but the opening scene could use a polish.

And speaking of polishes, Jeffries also fails to show the audience the stakes at the beginning of his story. When Sinclair – that’s Encom’s current boss/villain – asks Rush to go inside the computer, the whole scene plays out over a page and a half in which Sinclair persuades Rush to undergo an insane, experimental procedure – the whole “getting zapped into a computer” thing – and Rush agrees to do it because Sinclair promises to make him a partner in the company.

It just doesn’t wash, and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t. Jeffries later reveals that Sinclair and his cyber-world counterpart (the evil program Plexor) have been dispatching viruses around the world to frighten everyone into signing on with X-Net. There’s no reason why this movie couldn’t open with a newsreel about how a plague of cyber viruses is threatening the integrity of the world’s computer systems – and X-Net is the only hope. That would add very real tension to the opening scene. These code monkeys wouldn’t just be working to meet a deadline – they’d be working to save the world.

Oh, my user, my user …
Now, once we get past the opening scene in Tron 2, Jeffries quickly transports us to the cyber-world, where the script gains some momentum. Rush links up with some fellow programs and (as per his orders) takes on the seemingly nefarious Tron. Before I get into how Jeffries script short-shrifts the religious themes introduced in the original movie, let me provide a run-down of the characters in Tron 2 and what I thought of them.

Tron
Pretty much a cipher. He doesn’t have any dialogue, and Rush kills him about midway through the movie. His new look and new moves sound extremely badass, though, as seen in the original teaser trailer for this movie.

Oh, here’s one other cool thing about Tron: This is the only instance in this movie where we see a program that’s the result of more than one user – Flynn and Alan. That’s a missed opportunity in this movie. Back in the early 80s, single programmers writing entire programs from scratch was a little more common than today, when teams of developers will work on a single app. Just a thought.

Rush/Sean Flynn
Confused leading man and our proxy in the story. He eventually claims the Tron mantle.

Megan/Mega
The hot babe. I presume that Olivia Wilde is playing this role, and the thought of her in luminescent spandex sounds just fine.

Sinclair/Plexor
The bad guy. Indistinguishable from Dillinger/Sark in part one. Will John Hurt play this role?
Krod

From the Tron 2.0 video game.
A search program, and the movie’s comic relief. Pretty funny, with lots of off-kilter dialogue.

D-Rezz
A powerful deletion utility that helps out the heroes Has the potential to be pretty cute. He growls menacingly at various bad guys while clobbering them and dies in a scene sure to distress the kiddies

I-Beem
A frazzled denizen of the cyber-world. I’m not sure what kind of app he is, but he can teleport from one place to another.

Kevin Flynn
The hero of part one. In this movie, Flynn’s trapped deep inside the system and is the rougish leader of an army called the Finity Fighters. Jeffries portayal of Flynn isn’t bad, but as a leader, Flynn is stuck saying a lot of sis-boom-bah, inspirational speeches that feel strange coming out of his mouth.
Rumor held for years that Tron 2 would follow the structure of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, and that we would discover a Flynn who had retreated deep inside the system and lost some part of himself. Jeffries’ script clearly includes an element of that idea, but it’s missing two things:
1. Flynn hasn’t lost his mind.

2. Flynn isn’t a god.
Fighting for the Users
Once again, I go back to Lisberger’s original movie, in which the MCP has shut down all Input/Output towers and made it illegal to believe in “users.” When Flynn first sees Tron, he asks:

“Who’s that?”
Another program answers: “That’s Tron. He fights for the users.”

Later in the movie, Tron infiltrates a defunct I/O tower.

I know this is obvious, but this is church for programs. Programs get to interact with their creators first-hand. Lisberger suffuses the entire scene with religious imagery and language. Note how Tron bows his head in prayer when the tower guardian says, “All that is visible must grow beyond itself, and extend into the realm of the invisible.”

Elsewhere in the original movie, Flynn – an actual user – hooks up with a friendly program called Ram, who eventually gets killed, and before he dies, he utters the (now infamous) line, “Oh, my user, my user.”
Jeffries script also includes a “users don’t exist” ban from the bad guys in charge, but he keeps his script completely secular – and that’s a shame. I’ve never read Heart of Darkness, but in Apocalypse Now, Kurtz has become a god among men deep in the jungle. By comparison, Flynn actually is a god in the cyber-world, and it’s too bad that Jeffries’ script doesn’t explore that very rich thematic territory.

Or maybe I just want to hear Flynn yell the battle cry, “Fight for the users!”

Other stuff
Like I said – I think this is a fairly early draft, and I hope that later rewrites have repaired the problems I laid down here, because if the teaser trailer is any indication, this has the potential to expand upon the wonderful world Lisberger introduced. It’s filled with great action sequences, and despite my earlier complaints, there’s still plenty of invention. To wit:

Apple Lisa
The code monkeys in the beginning have to break out an old Apple Lisa – one of Steve Jobs’ biggest boondoggles – to hack into the old mainframe. Awesome.

Flynn as an urban legend
Around Encom, it’s become the stuff of myth that Flynn actually went into the computer. Nice touch.

Hub City
We finally get a close look at a “city” in the cyber-world, where Encom’s operatives are running advertisements everywhere that X-Net is the latest and greatest thing.

Data surfing
While on the run, Rush, Krod, et al, have to surf along waves of data. Could go either way, but it’s a neat idea.

Memory leak
Memory leak, a pretty common problem for programmers, as I understand, is a deadly green sludge in the cyber-world. Cool.

Garrett Hedlund catches a departing flight out of Vancouver International Airport in British Columbia, Canada on Saturday (April 11).

The 24-year-old is on his way to Los Angeles via LAX airport.

Garrett is currently filming Disney’s TR2N, which is the sequel to the 1982 film Tron. He reportedly will play the character of Sean, the son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) who discovers that Flynn’s old program CLU (played by a younger Bridges) has taken over.

Garrett looks really fit, cannot wait for more candids!!

So it has confirmed some details from the Tron spoilers in the past post.

Tron Plot Details

According to a “reliable tipster” the story takes place 25 years after the original film. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) has disappeared after creating some of the world’s top selling game of all time and fathering a son. ENCOM head Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) presents twenty-something-year-old Sean Flynn (possibly Garrett Hedlund?) with information that propels him on a journey to find his long lost father.
Right off the bat — the title. It looks like it won’t be called Tr2n or Tron 2 or just Tron as we’ve heard; it’s looking like it will get the colon treatment, like Tron: Our Bikes Are More Awesome Than Yours or Tron: The Virtual Beginning of the End Begins Again Soon. This is good news, as the titles we had heard so far weren’t very good, so hopefully they dream up something cool.

The movie will apparently begin in 1989, where Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is living well by selling toys and novelties based on his experiences in the first movie (Recognizer night lights?). For no reason at all, Flynn then disappears completely, leaving behind his seven-year old son, Sean.

Some years or so later, Sean is now in his twenties (I’m assuming that this will be the role of Garrett Hedlund [Read: Garrett Hedlund Cast As Lead In 'Tron']). He goes to meet Tron himself — Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner), who took over Flynn’s company Encom. Bradley gives him some information which may lead Sean to his father, so he takes it and goes on his search.

This is likely where the movie really gets into it. While searching, Sean finds himself at Flynn’s old arcade, and before you know it, he’s inside the infamous computer world, where he finds a Clu. For those unfamiliar with Tron, Bradley and Flynn had alter-egos or characters of themselves in the computer world — Bradley was called Tron, Flynn was called Clu.

Sean comes to find out that his father Kevin Flynn programmed Clu to constantly be working to improve the computer world, but the program has gone off on its own track and has begun creating its own world while trying to remove a kind of program called Isos. The Isos believe Sean Flynn is basically their savior sent to destroy the evil Clu.

All of this will be going on while the real, missing Kevin Flynn is somewhere else in the world riding around on a vintage Light Cycle. When they meet, will Flynn side with his evil program self, or the son he abandoned?

Garrett is attached to a new movie, that is/was filmed in Arizona, i think it might be a small production because news articles are hard to find online.

Synopsis:

Movie Teaser

When a group of young adults convene to celebrate their doctor’s retirement and a fellow friend’s documentary on Juvenile mental health care, they have no idea that their past would return to haunt them. Robert Rose, son of a prominent African American family (mother the town Judge and his father a Doctor who lost his license) who was put in the juvenile research facility as a teen with other troubled teens diagnosed with conditions like OCD, ADHD, teen depression, etc. and other Social disorders under two Doctors (Dr. Dixon and Dr. Johnson) care who have two different types of treatment for the teens. The teens and the program are doing well except for Robert Rose who has lost favor with Dr. Dixon and the troubled teens. On the last night of the program the teens make one last prank on Robert Rose who in turn kills one of the kids and in turn the teens kill Robert Rose. The teens and Dr. Dixon cover it up as an accident and agree they never bring it up ever again and move on with their lives.

After 10 years of success the teens do not know is that Robert Rose is still alive and graduated the Juvenile Program in to the Mental facility under Dr. Dixon’s care and supervision. In the week of Dr. Dixon’s retirement Robert Rose is to be transferred into a Government program and escapes, fully determined to seek his version of justice upon Dr. Dixon and his family, who kept him from his family and improperly diagnosed him. Rose finds out that the same teens who left him for dead are all celebrating Dr. Dixon’s success as well as their own. With aid from his family the journey of Robert Rose leaves behind a path of blood and bodies and his determination to seek full retribution on his former “fellow” inmates, now convening to herald their Doctor’s accomplishment. Robert Rose and his family seek vengeance in their small Arizona town, bringing a new meaning to the term serial killer. The only being who can save the town is the local Sheriff who too has his demons with the death of his wife from cancer and the accidental death of his son under the care of Dr. Dixon 10 years ago is determined to bring justice but to find out that the same person he is after is the one who killed his son.

Garrett will be playing a 27 year old Car Dealership Owner named Erik Ship.

Erik Ship:
A foster kid as a child was adopted by the Ship family. Was entered into Dr. Dixon’s care at the age of 15 Erik was ADD, ADHD, and like to cut himself. Was Dr. Nixon’s other challenge other than Robert. Erik liked to pick on the other teens and was best friends with Jacky Ryan. On the night Jacky was killed by Robert, Erik actually saved the day by taking Robert out. Obtained his family’s Car Dealership once he turned 2, not having a need for oney Erik turned his cutting addiction to a gambling addiction and has run up a few lines of debt with some unsavory debt collectors (Similar to Hectic, i see). Erik being Erik does not phase him and stays cocky and arrogant. Erik’s favourite line is, “I have more money than an ATM machine”.

Hedlund will play the lead, a man who finds himself pulled into the world of a computer and retracing the steps of a character from the original movie named Kevin Flynn.

Jeff Bridges is reprising the role of Flynn, who was a computer programr but ended up as the CEO of a software corporation. Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett have also been cast in the project, which was known as “Tron 2″ and “Tr2n” but it now going with the simple “Tron.”

More articles have been added to the Archived Articles, confirming that Garrett will play the lead.

According to IMDB the movie is due to release in 2011.

Not sure how reliable the source is but Hollywood.com has stated that Garrett will be starring as Dean in On The Road, a book adaption written by Jack Kerouac.

In the early 1950s, an aspiring writer heads out west and meets up with some friends, old and new. Together they experience the road.

How awesome that Garrett is attached to another movie??! Woohoo!
